Greeley, Colorado is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 21,567 at the 2010 census. Greeley is the county seat of Weld County. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Area and it is included in the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Economic Development District. The downtown area has been called "the most livable city in America" by Forbes magazine and has been ranked one of the safest cities in the United States by CNNMoney. The first Europeans to visit Greeley were French traders and fur trappers who traveled through Weld County on their way to St. Louis in 1806. In 1821, George Ralston Purcell built a dam on Lake Greeley so that he could irrigate his land near what is now downtown Greeley. The town was founded as a station on the Santa Fe Trail north of Aspen during its early years. In 1872, when railroad construction began through Weld County, Greeley became one of several towns along the line to be developed as railtowns. By 1890, there were over 100 buildings in Greeley with a population of over 2,000 people. In 1907, Mayor John Fenton proposed that Greeley become an incorporated city within five years; however, due to opposition from some residents who wanted more control over their community's affairs than granted by incorporation law then existed (), Greeley instead elected to become an unincorporated village under state law on January 1st 1909 (). On July 8th 1915 voters approved Measure V which repealed all laws governing municipal government within unincorporated areas (except for those providing for water rights or public parks) and made each individual resident responsible for all activities within his or her township or community (). Greeley, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of North America. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Greeley is located in Kane County. It is bordered by Asotin to the north, Silverthorne to the east and south, Lafayette to the west and north-west, and Park City to the northwest. The first European settlers in what is now Greeley were gold prospectors who traveled through this area during 1858-59. George Hearn built a cabin on Nob Hill in 1859 while he was working for John D’Arcy Cooke of Denver as an Indian agent. In 1861, George Hearn married Eliza Jane Wickersham and they began farming around Nob Hill. They also raised cattle and sheep near their home until he died in 1865. Their son Washburn took over farm operations until 1893 when his father’s death made him heir apparent to the business interests of his father's two sons – including Washburn & Sons Hardware Store which still stands today on Main Street in Greeley (and has been operating since 1892). In 1896, local resident Lillie Prentice donated land for a municipal park that would later become known as Prentice Park%. The town fathers quickly realized that there was no need for another public square downtown since citizens had plenty of space within their own homes or neighborhoods for picnics, ball games, dances etc.. So they decided instead to build a new school building on State Street just west of present day Kapp Road/Prentice Rd.. This new school building served as both civic center and primary school from 1896 until it burned down in 1933.
