Greeley is a city in Colorado, United States. The population was 58,651 at the 2010 census. Greeley is part of the Pueblo, Colorado Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Greeley were Spanish traders and missionaries in 1609. The area that now includes Greeley was first inhabited by the Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians before being claimed by the United States in 1854 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Greeley, Colorado was founded on November 29, 1872 by George Armstrong Custer and his brother-in-law, James W. Hutton. The town was named for Custer's home of Greeley in Illinois. The first post office in Greeley opened on December 1, 1872. The first store in the town was built by G.A.C.'s brother-in-law Hiram Sibley and is still standing today. The population of Greeley grew rapidly from its small initial population of just over 100 people to 2,000 by 1880 when a railroad station was built and it became an important transportation center for the region. In 1902 the Erie Railroad came through Greeley and started passenger service which made it even more important as a trade center for the area. In 1917 the United States First World War ended and most businesses closed; however, some continued operation until after the war ended in 1919. In 1932 Wheatland Dairy began operations out of what is now called the old dairy building on Main Street in downtown Greeley; this became one of the largest milk producers in Colorado before it eventually closed down due to financial difficulties in 1978. In 1966 Rocky Mountains Electric Cooperative began operations out of what is now called Tower Place across from City Hall; this became one of Colorado’s first electric cooperative stores
