Greeley is a city in Colorado, United States. The population was 17,853 at the 2010 census and it is the second-largest city in Colorado after Denver. Greeley is located on the South Platte River near the Wyoming border. The first Europeans to visit Greeley were fur traders from Montreal in 1812; they named it "Nucy" because of a peak to the east that resembled a nun's habit. In 1821, George Bent became interested in exploring the area and sent out two men, William Hickenlooper and James Bridger, as scouts to assess potential sites for settlement. On July 8, 1824, Bent dispatched his party of five with orders to build an adobe fort at what is now known as Fort Green Gulch on today's northwest side of town. After camping there for several weeks, he decided againstreturning empty-handed and returned to Montreal with new supplies and reinforcements under Captain John A. Griggs. In 1828–29 John Cappadocie discovered coal seams in what would later become Greeley; this led to the founding of Coal Creek Mining Company by Captains Isaac Neely and James Bridger on December 5, 1830. By November 1st 1830, over 2 million pounds (1 ton) of coal had been mined from these seams in what would eventually become Greeley Township (now Larimer County). The first courthouse was built here between 1830 and 1834; it burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt using stone brought overland from Kansas City by wagonloads. In 1839–40 agreements were made with various Native American groups for land around present-day Greeley Heights; however due to disagreements about share payments these treaties never came into effect. The first white person born in Greeley was Jesse O'Neill on April 12th 1840 when his family immigrated from Ireland northward aboard the "John Rhea". After landing they traveled south along Clear Creek through present day Thornton until reaching Cherry Valley which they renamed Northern Colonois after their homeland back home – a move that outraged some local Indian tribes who considered themselves rightful owners of that land since their ancestors had long inhabited this region before any European arrivals stepped foot on it! 10 years later another group of Irish immigrants arrived at High Plains Ranchstead via stagecoach en route Carbondale so they could purchase 4 acres (2 ha) nearpresent day North Park off US 6 just west of downtown GreeLEY! The history of Greeley can be traced back to 1867 when George Crockett settled down in what is now Greeley, CO. He was inspired to move to this location after watching his friend and fellow frontiersman Kit Carson travel through the area on his way to California. Crockett quickly realized that he could use his fame from these travels to help support himself and his family while he awaited word from home about whether or not he would be successful in reaching California. Crockett’s arrival has been cited as one of the main reasons for growth within Greeley over the next few years. His presence helped spur commerce and development within the community which allowed for more people to live here permanently instead of just passing through during their visits to Independence or Denver. This also led to an increase in jobs available for those living here, which helped contribute to revenue which funded civic improvements and infrastructure projects across town. In 1907, Greeley became a city under incorporation ordinance following a vote by its citizens representatives. At first, it was difficult for residents living outside of downtown (then called First Ward) to get involved with city life due thereto being very isolated from other parts of town by then- only two streets wide between blocks A & B Olympic Boulevard!
