The Greeley National Guard was established on November 3, 1861, after the outbreak of the Civil War. The Guard was originally composed of men from central Colorado and western Wyoming. The first unit to be organized in Greeley was the 1st Colorado Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which served in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1866, Greeley became a city and the National Guard moved into what is now called Armory Square. This location allowed for better access to education and commerce for the city’s citizens. In 1911, Greeley became a state capital and again the National Guard moved into Armory Square. During World War I, Greeley played an important role in military aviation by providing resources such as airfields and pilots to support America’s war efforts. In 1948, Greeley became an official city with its own police department and also began hosting summer Olympics events. Today, there are over 2,000 members of the Greeley Municipal Police Department who serve alongside 9th Judicial District Sheriff deputies throughout our community. Additionally, there are multiple private security companies that offer their services to individuals and businesses within our community. The Greeley National Guard was created on November 1, 1907 in response to the Colorado Statehood Act of 1876. The first national guard unit was organized in Greeley under the command of Major General James H. Meredith. The first units were stationed at Fort Lyon and Fort George G. Meade and their primary purpose was to maintain law and order during local elections. In 1912, the National Guard detachment stationed in Greeley became known as the First Battalion, Denver National Guard and served as an auxiliary force for the Denver Police Department. In 1916, the battalion became part of the Second Brigade of Colorado Army National Guardsman which later evolved into the Third Brigade of Colorado Army National Guardsmen which served in World War I until 1919 when it returned home to serve as a reserve unit until it was disbanded on October 15, 1922. The Greeley-based 3rd Battalion (Colorado Springs), also known as “the White Devils” because they wore white uniforms with green stripes down one side) served in World War II before being mobilized for Operation Overlord on September 8, 1944 and deploying to Normandy France where they helped liberate Paris from Nazi occupation. After returning home they were demobilized on December 8th 1946 and disbanded again that same year.
Greeley is a small town located in Colorado. The population was 15,421 at the 2010 census. Greeley's economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing. The main employer in Greeley is the Greeley Chamber of Commerce which has been a mainstay in the community since its incorporation as a borough in 1892. Other major employers include PepsiCo, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and Canon Incorporated. The first people to live in what is now Greeley were farmers who cultivated maize and other crops. By 1840, however, entrepreneur Elias Howe had built an elegant brick building near present-day Civic Center that became known as the "New Colfax Hotel". In 1885 the United States Post Office was established here and by 1888 it had become one of the most important towns in Weld County due to its large population and location along Interstate 70 (known then as State Highway 8). In 1932, during World War II, Greeley became home to two Army Air Forces training stations: Lowry Field on Willow Creek Boulevard and Moffat Field on Canisteo Mesa Boulevard. Lowry Field would later become home to Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Laboratory while Moffat Field would become home to Hickam Air Force Base before being closed down completely in 1971 by Congress following revelations of problems with air quality there. During the late 1960s through early 1970s, much of downtown Greeley was destroyed by fire throughout what today is called Old Town Greeley; this included one particularly destructive fire that raged for days across central business district between Main Street and First Avenue South (now College Avenue). evacuated residents were able to return relatively quickly after firefighters put out all but one building within minutes of arriving on scene. The old downtown area now houses several high-end restaurants including Benares Chinese restaurant which opened up shortly after the rebuild began; during that time also new businesses such as AnheuserBusch Brewery moved into Old Town from their original locations just east of I-70 outside Denver proper.
