The USS Constitution was a ship of great usefulness during the Revolutionary War, and its use in that conflict helped inspire Americans to believe in their own potential as a nation. Greeley, Colorado is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. Greeley is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Greeley were Native American people who hunted and gathered food near the confluence of the North Platte and Arkansas Rivers. They built their villages on high ground overlooking these rivers because it offered them immunity from raiders and other threats. The first white man to come to Greeley was Captain John Wesley Hodge in 1868 when he founded the town on land that he had bought from the Pueblo de los Arcos Indians east of Fort Morgan. Hodge named his new community after George Vancouver, captain general of British Columbia during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). When Hodge realized that there was no market for his goods in California due to Mexican control of much of that territory, he returned home and established Greeley as an independent city in 1871. It became an agricultural center with production of wheat, oats, barley, hay, cheese, butter and other dairy products being its majorstay until about 1940 when aircraft manufacturing became a significant factor in community development. In 1912 Greeley joined forces with Aurora to form a municipal district which lasted until 1975 when Aurora split off into its own municipality). Greeley experienced rapid growth following World War II as Boeing began producing jets there; however Growth slowed thereafter as suburbanization spread throughout Weld County while jobs moved away from rural areas into larger cities such as Denver or Aurora
