The original population of Greeley was only around 100 people. By the end of the 19th century, Greeley had grown to over 2,000 people. In 1912, Greeley became the first municipality in Colorado to be established as an unincorporated community. The population of Greeley has continued to grow throughout the years and currently stands at nearly 30,000 people. The history of Greeley begins with its founding in 1876 by George Greely. At that time, it was a remote outpost on the edge of what is now Weld County. Despite this location, George Greeley believed that his town could become an important center for trade and commerce within the area. He began erecting buildings and infrastructure within what is now known as downtown Greeley soon after its establishment. This included a millinery store and hotel which quickly became popular among locals. Additionally, he also erected a schoolhouse and other public buildings within what is now know as Centennial Park today. As time passed however, tension began to increase between local residents and those from nearby towns such as Longmont and Lafayette due to their competing interests within the region! As a result, efforts were made by George Greely to establish closer ties with these larger municipalities through various means including receptions/meetings with elected officials and business collaborations! Ultimately though, these efforts proved fruitless as tensions between individual communities continued unabated! In 1912 however, Central City (now Centennial Park) became another small community located adjacent to Gregg Street in central GreeLEY! This development stemmed from an effort by both Mayor J P Hardin (a Longmont resident) and GEORGE GREELEY himself to improve economic conditions within Central City! despite having different goals at hand: Mayor Hardin wanted Central Cityto function more like an incorporated village while GEORGE GREELEY desired it serve as a model for municipal government across all Western Colorado settlements! Although not without some controversy along the way (elements operating out of Centennial Park disputed this designation), ultimately GEORGE GREELEY's goal came true: Central City transitioned into an unincorporated community under his jurisdiction!
