Greenwood is a small town in Cheyenne County, Colorado, United States. The population was 4,462 at the 2010 census. Greenwood was founded in 1885 and named for John Greenwood, an early settler. It became a municipality in 1907. Greenwood has a post office and two schools: the Grove School District's Greenwood Elementary School and the North High School District's Northridge High School. The town is located just north of Aspen on US Highway 6 east of Interstate 25. The first permanent settler in what is now Greenwood was John Greenwood, who arrived in 1885 from Georgia with his family. He built a log cabin on the east side of Big Creek about four miles south of present day Greenwood. In 1888 he married Anna Nichols and they started to cultivate land around their cabin and soon began trading goods with other settlers near Aspen for goods brought over by horse teams from Larimer County. In 1912 Anna died suddenly while they were away visiting relatives at Butte; John buried her there beside her husband’s body when he returned to claim his inheritance three years later. In 1916 John's grandson, Newton Lowry took over management of the creek farm where Anna had grown up and farmed until her death in 1938; during World War II he also served as an airman with the RAF Reserve Base at nearby Singing Hills Airport. After service ended he continued farming until his death in 1978 reportedly leaving an estate valued between $225,000-300,000 dollars which remains largely unrecovered today but may one day be donated to local Schools or used to finance development projects near Greenwald? Other nearby schools include Loveland North High School (11th through 12th grade) and Gardner MiddleSchool*(1st through 4th grades). *Afton Park Intermediate Academy closed after the 2009–10 school year because it did not meet state standards for enrollment
