The Greenwood Air National Guard's 388th Wing is the only operationalAAF wings in Colorado and has been a part of the National Guard since 1947. The wing currently flies F-16s, E-3D Sentinels, and KC-135Cs. In 1951, the 388th was equipped with the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft. In 1957, the 388th became an all C-130H squadron when it received its first C-130A Globemaster III from Boeing. In 1970, the 388th began flying McDonnell Douglas MD-80s as its primary transport aircraft. On 3 January 1979, during Operation Neptune's Spear (the invasion of Afghanistan), Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh crashed his airplane into a building near Pueblo while on his way to bomb Denver International Airport; this event is generally considered to be one of the largest aviation disasters in United States history.

Greenwood, Colorado is located in the Rocky Mountains of Western Colorado. The town was founded in 1867 by Major John Greenwood and his wife, Miss Sarah Greenwood. In 1919, Greenwood was named after General George Custer who died during the Indian Wars. The townsite was platted in 1867 by Major John Greenwood and Sarah Greenwood, daughter of Daniel Boone. The first post office in the town was established on July 24, 1868. Greenwood has a population of around 950 people as of 2010. It is the smallest town in Douglas County and second-smallest town overall behind Pueblo. According to the 2010 census, Greenwood has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²). The climate here is mild to warm year round with average temperatures ranging from 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit) to 42 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit). Winters are typically cold with snow cover lasting until early spring; however there have been times when temperatures have reached 50° Celsius (122° Fahrenheit). The most common type of precipitation here is rain which falls mostly during winter but also occasional thunderstorms and light rainfalls throughout the year. Asphalt roads were not paved until after World War II so traffic tie-ups are common on rural routes during heavy rains; however this should generally be resolved quickly by vehicles turning around or going down alternate routes if necessary due to limited street parking possibilities within two blocks of either store or service station entrance!
Greenwood was founded in 1872 by a group of railroad men. The community grew quickly, and by 1880 it had 4 businesses. The town developed a strong economy based on agriculture, lumbering, and manufacturing. Greenwood experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its location at the center of an expanding Denver-Boulder Railroad network. By World War I, Greenwood had more than 12 businesses and 100 residents. The population peaked in 1925 with 1,500 people living in Greenwood alone. However, during the Great Depression Greenwood lost its economic stability and dwindled to just 100 residents by 1933. Despite this decline, Greenwood remains an important node in Colorado's history because of its significant role in the development of Denver-Boulder County.
