Greenwood, Colorado is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Fort Collins–Averill Park Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by pioneers in 1879 on land that had been donated by David Atherton. Greenwood was one of four towns organized by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1887 when it built its line through Weld County. The other three towns were Golden (founded 1886), Loveland (1889), and Brighton (1902). The first store in Greenwood opened on Christmas Day 1879. The town continued to grow as people began to settle there from surrounding counties. In 1888, the city of Fort Collins was created from portions of Greeley and Loveland districts. However, because Greenwood lay within Weld County and not Fort Collins proper, it remained unincorporated until 1912 when it became an incorporated town under state law. In 1912, the railroad abandoned its line between Greeley and Golden; as a result, Greenwood lost most of its industry and population but kept its downtown core which remains today a popular tourist destination thanks to its history and architecture dating back to the 1800s
