Gun gift history in Greenwood, Colorado began with a gun from the post office. On December 3, 1892, Greenwood Postmaster John C. Hanks sent a .22 caliber rifle to A.F. Smith and Sons firearms store in Denver for sale to Daniel Boone. The rifle was used as part of the Christmas present for his wife Annie Oakley. In 1896, A.F. Smith and Sons added handguns to their line up and sold them through mail order to local hunters and shooters. In 1907, they opened an additional store on Welton Street in Greenwood Village where they continued selling handguns until they closed in 1968. Through their stores and Mail Order shop, A.F Smith & Sons played an important role in the development of handgun gifting in Colorado Springs and Greenwood Village

Greenwood was first settled in 1876 and named for Greenwood Plantation on the Clear Creek River. The town began as a small agricultural community near the mouth of Clear Creek. A post office was established in 1876, and by 1880, Greenwood had a population of 50. In 1902, the name of the town was changed to Greenwood Village to reflect its growth as an incorporated municipality. The first mayor of Greenwood Village was John Ladd (1902-1994). In 2001, Greenwood became home to Rocky Mountains College which merged with Northern Colorado University to create Denver State University in 2002. The merger caused many residents to leave their homes for good and made Greenwood one of the most heavily populated towns in San Miguel County. Greenwood, Colorado was founded in 1876 by George Greenwood and his wife, Eliza. The town became a census-designated place in 1981. Greenwood is located in Douglas County, Colorado and has a population of 5,636 as of the 2010 census. It is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in the United States. The first European to settle in Greenwood was George Greenwood himself. He and his wife Eliza came from Michigan and were both farmers. They started farming early on in their lives and it was an important part of their life that they could share this with their children. The first store in Greenwood opened its doors in 1886. This store was owned by Mr. John Wesson and his family who also operated a sawmill around the same time. The ice cream parlor which still stands today opened its doors for business on December 1st, 1895! This establishment became known as “The Fortunes” due to its success at attracting customers from all over the area! From here on out, businesses began to sprout up throughout Greenwood including a post office (1896), livery stable (1902), grocery store (1904), barber shop (1907), beauty salon (1911), dentist office/clinic (1914) and more! In 1951, when America underwent its centennial celebration, Greenwood decided to participate! The town erected a monument honoring America’s history that can be found across from First National Bank building today! In 1988, when Rocky Mountain News published an article about how different communities are changing within our country during this time period, we approached George Greenwood with an idea to create a community history museum within the town boundaries! His son then took on this project with great passion & success which now presents itself as “Greenwood Museum”!!! Today, this museum offers wonderful displays about American culture through exhibits related specifically to what happened within our borders between 1876-88!!! It truly is unique & amazing how much has come into existence throughout these past 100 years!!
