Greenwood, Colorado is a small town located in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is home to the Greenwood Cemetery and the Greenwood Village Historic District. The first permanent settler in what is now Greenwood was Samuel Hammond in 1855. The area that would become Greenwood was first settled by Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants for food. In 1868, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Rocksville and started trading goods with the local Indian tribes. By 1870, most of what is now Greenwood had been land claimed by prospectors and settlers. In 1875, Haskell Weiser founded the Republic Mining Company in order to find new gold mines in western Colorado. He named his company after himself and two other men who had helped him find gold: George Atherton (founder of Denver) and Daniel Boone (a scout for John Custer). In 1876, Weiser lost all his money on his mining venture and returned to England where he died several weeks later. His company continued to search for new gold mines but failed again in 1880. This time around, many of Weiser's employees went bankrupt or deserted him after losing their jobs due to harsh competition from other companies within months of each other during the Panic of 1893/1894. In 1902, a group of businessmen from Greeley formed a joint stock company called Northern Pacific Railway which began construction on what would be known as the Keystone Cutoff Line from Greeley southward through Garfield County into Texas over parts already traveled by cattle drives since at least 1859! Although originally built as an agricultural route connecting Kansas City with Fort Worth via Cedar Rapids/Iowa City; eventually it became one of America’s great railways thanks to its ability to take advantage of natural resources like coalitions west of Denver! Greenwood was founded in 1867 by George Greenwood and his wife, Catharine. The Greenwood family homesteaded on the east side of the Rocky Mountains, about six miles from what is now Denver. In 1868, George Greenwood and two other men started a store in what is now the heart of downtown Denver. From this store, Greenwood began to sell goods from his farm land down the street. By 1870, Greenwood had a large business with goods from all over Colorado and Wyoming. In 1881, he bought out his partners and became sole proprietor of the business. The first store building was erected in 1881 at Ninth and Welton Streets in downtown Denver. It was built as a three-story structure with an attic for storage space and a basement for customers to come down to buy goods. In 1890, George Greenwood retired from the business but continued to operate it as a single man until his death in 1933. His widow continued running the business until her death in 1959. The store was then sold to Rufus Hruska who operated it until 1978 when it reverted back to its original name - The George Greenwood Store Ltd.—until it closed again in 1996 after being taken over by another company which reopened it as an antique shop later that year
