Greenwood was founded in 1881 by Alfred Greenwood and his brother Enoch Greenwood as a mining town. It became a small city in 1907. In 1959, it merged with the neighboring town of Commerce to form the larger city of Greenwood Village. The city's name comes from Alfred Greenwood's donation of land for its creation. The first store in Greenwood opened on December 12th, 1881.
