The first settler in Greenwood was David Folsom who arrived in 1872 and homesteaded about one-half mile south of the present day police station building. He named his place "Folsom Grove". In the early 1800s, there were several villages along the greenstone river near present day Greeley. One of these villages was called "Grand Preceptor", which may have derived from an Indian name meaning "head of water." The village fell into disrepair following its incorporation into Greeley and mustered no resistance when Denver annexed Weld County in 1876.
