The United States Navy has a long and proud history in Greenwood, Colorado. The first U.S. Naval Station in the area was established at Fort Defiance on the southern shore of Lake Erie in 1855, and the Navy played a significant role in helping to build Rocky Mountain National Park. Today, the Navy's primary presence in Greenwood is its Naval Air Station at George Washington University – home of Operation Neptune's Spear, one of America's most famous naval engagements – as well as its headquarters for operations worldwide. In 1980, Rear Admiral John Slessor became the first Commodore of Naval Base Greenwood when it was opened to serve as a combined command post for both Marine Corps Reserve Command and The United States Coast Guard. Commodore Slessor led NAS George Washington University until his retirement in 1997. Commodore Slessor is survived by his wife and two children. Since its inception, NAS George Washington University has been an important part of the community in which it resides. Not only does it offer students opportunities to engage with world-renowned faculty and scholars from around the globe, but also it provides access to cutting-edge technology that helps sailors operate more efficiently and effectively on patrol or deployed missions aroundthe world. The Greenwood Naval Shipyard was founded in 1915 and today is the largest shipbuilding complex in the Western Hemisphere. The yard has built more than 50 warships, including 8 ships of the USS Constitution Class.
Greenwood is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Fort Collins-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Greenwood was Daniel Webster in 1869. A post office called Greenwood was established in 1880, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The name "Greenwood" derives from a location near the present-day corner of 24th Street and National Boulevard which had been given to the town by Amos Eaton while on horseback as a gift due to its proximity to Aurorasn Mines (now known as Colorado Mining & Smelting Company). The first store opened in 1886 and served as the nucleus of what would become Greenwood's commercial activity for over 100 years. Many local businesses were founded during this time including Denny's restaurant, the Red Lion Hotel, and First National Bank of Aurora. During World War II, Greenwood became an important stop on U S Seventh Army's supply route between Alamogordo and Fort Carson; truckloads of military supplies stopped there every day for eight months straight during the war. In 1945, when Fort Carson closed due to budget cuts within the army, most of these supplies were sent back east where they were used to rebuild America after World War II. In recent years much development has taken place around the town with new homes being built along 24th Street NE., as well as business expansions into new districts such as North Park and South Park which have seen rapid growth over recent years. One such development which hasreceived mixed reviews is Westmoreland Place which contains high-end residences but also provides little public infrastructure or amenities such as streetscapes or parks like those found near other larger cities

Greenwood, Colorado was founded in 1872 by Horace Greeley. The town was named for Greenwood Forest, a large tract of land that had been donated to the community by Colonel James W. Greenwood. The forest was located in Pueblo County and its boundaries were defined by the Purgatory Mountains to the north, Black Mesa to the east, and Canon City to the south. The first residents of Greenwood arrived in 1872 and soon after began developing the town. In 1875, a post office was established in Greenwood and it remained in operation until 1915. During this time, Greenwood grew rapidly as a result of its location and reputation as a gambling center. In 1893, Greenwood became an incorporated city and quickly started taking on additional responsibilities within its boundaries. By 1910, however, Greenwood's growth had stalled and it accordingly ceased operation as an incorporated city. However, it continued to exist as a census-designated place (CDP) until 1985 when it merged with nearby Arvada into Arvada-Greenwood CDP

In the early 20th century, Greenwood grew as a result of its role as an agricultural center and as a manufacturing town for products such as textiles, shoes, automobiles, and munitions. The population peaked at around 10,000 in the 1930s but declined during the Great Depression. After World War II, Greenwood reverted to its rural roots and experienced steady decline until it reached its current size in the 1990s.
