The Lafayette Air Force Base is home to the Colorado Springs-based 1st Fighter Wing. The wing, which was activated on September 12, 1942, is one of the most veteran units in the USAF. Its history goes back to World War II when its predecessor unit, the 347th Fighter Group (later redesignated as the 343rd Fighter Wing), was activated at Randolph Field in Texas. It flew combat missions over Japan and Europe before being disbanded in 1945. The wing's first mission was to support Operation Crossroads in northern Africa during World War II. From 1946 through 1948 it operated from RAF Horsham, England as part of Ninth Air Force which carried out airlift operations between North America and Europe. In 1951, 1st Fighter Wing moved from Colorado Springs to Seymour Johnson AFB) in Georgia where it became operational as a fighter-bomber squadron flying Boeing F-86 Sabres. Inactivated on October 15, 1957 due to budget cuts within USAF however it was reactivated again on December 3rd under new command with Republic F-104 Starfighters operating from bases throughout the Southeast United States; this finally ended when Continental Airlines merged with USAirways effective July 1st 1959. Inactivated once again on October 15th 1960 due to budgetary constraints within USAF however it was reactivated once more on April 16th 1961 as an experimental jet conversion unit at Shaw AFB) SC). In 1902, Lafayette incorporated as a village and changed its name to Lafayette after General Lafayette Bonaparte (1799-1862), who had served as America's First Infantry Colonel in Mexico during the Mexican War (1846-48). Lafayette became an agricultural center after settlers arrived in droves during the late 1800s looking for land to grow crops. The industry that has dominated Lafayette since then includes agriculture, manufacturing, retail trade and service sectors today. Manufacturing jobs have disappeared but are being replaced by new businesses that are based on technology or health care services. In recent years there has been growth in tourism with many people traveling to see sites such as Rocky Mountains scenery or enjoy shopping at local boutiques. Today, Lafayette is home to several churches including Christ United Methodist Church which was built around 1920; Presbyterianism established here in 1865; St Andrews Episcopal Church which was dedicated on October 25th 1905; First Baptist Church founded here on November 5th 1907; American Baptist Churches were organized here on December 9th 1914; Roman Catholicism arrived here through immigrants from Italy circa 1880s . Lafayette is a town in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 and named after Lafayette, France. Lafayette is situated on the course of the Larimer River and its tributaries. Some nearby mountain ranges are the Rocky Mountains to the north and east and the San Juan Mountains to the south. The town has a temperate climate with average temperatures reaching 50°F (10°C) on warm days and 33°F (0°C) or below on cold days. The first people to inhabit Lafayette were Arapaho Native Americans who lived around what is now North Park Boulevard in what is now part of downtown Lafayette. They hunted and gathered food along the riverbanks until 1851 when white settlers arrived from California seeking land for ranching operations. In 1861, American forces entered Colorado as part of Operation Overland and removed all but a handful of Native Americans from their lands within present-day Jefferson County. The remainder of these early settlers were Anglo-Saxon Protestants who arrived by wagon train overland through Wyoming Territory intoJefferson County during 1863–1864 as part of General Philip Sheridan's Campaign against Mexican troops under Santa Anna In 1881, Lafayette was founded by men from Pueblo who had come westward for business reasons; also living in that year were J H Price, Charles W Dixon, John Fenton, Hiram Sibley, George C Moorehead Sr., Edward B English and others from Pueblo proper Lafayette grew rapidly due to exportsation throughout southern Colorado via railroads; wheat became especially important because it could be shipped long distances without being broken down into smaller pieces which would spoilage After World War I demand for munitions increased; however production stopped due to competitive prices brought about by new technologies Lafayettes manufacturing industry became highly specialized including aircraft construction which began common use during World War II Thanks largely to this activity some $14 million has been invested in local businesses since 1941
