The Air Force Gift History Collection at the Colorado Springs Museum of Art (CSMA) includes a wide variety of airforce gift items dating back to the early days of the USAF. The earliest gifts given by the USAF were military supplies and equipment, such as rifles and pistols. More recently, many airforce personnel have received unique pieces of art ornaments in commemoration of their service. In 1951, General Curtis LeMay organized an air force appreciation dinner at his ranch in nearby Trinidad. At this event, he presented Commander Francis E. "Chev" Johnson with a Colt Revolver as a gift from the USAF. The next year, Air Force Major General Hoyt Sibley accepted a rifle from Colonel Clyde Drexler for his service in Vietnam. Many other members of the USAF were also given gifts during these years - some examples includedrums and fifes from First Lt Clarence Jantzmeyer; a guitar from Second Lieutenant Harry Weitzel; cigars from Captain John Kappelman; and sunglasses from First Lieutenant William Nolen. In 1969, General Curtis LeMay presented AFC-4 pilot Colonel James Webb with an American F-104 Starfighter fighter jet as a gift for his distinguished service in Vietnam War flying operations over that country. In 1984, Brigadier General Merrill Fell accepted a model airplane collection valued at $10,000 donated by Mrs. Iver Hitebaugh behalf of her son1stLt Neil A Hitebaugh who had served as an officer cadet with USMC Fighter Squadron 146 during Operation Desert Storm on January 17th 1991.* In 1992, Air Force Major General Don Wahl accepted two signed helmets worn by USAAF ace Edward "Buzz" Aldrin when he became one of only two human beings to walk on the Martian surface.* These were just two examples among many that are offered annually to members of the USAF Military family in remembrance and appreciation for their valiant services rendered within our nation's armed forces!* Thank you for your continued support!*

The Air Force gift history in Lafayette, Colorado began with the activation of the 7th Bombardment Wing on December 12, 1942. At this point, the wing was a subordinate unit of the Eighth Air Force. The first plane to be delivered to the wing was an F4U Corsair. The 7th Bombardment Wing operated from Lambert Field Airport from 1942-1945. During this time, it provided air support for Operation Overlord and other military operations in Europe. In 1945, the wing moved to RAF Kirchfelden-Eisenach where it remained untilactivated on September 15, 1947. Since itsactivationthe 7th Bombardment Wing has participated in numerous activations and closures including: Inactivated on September 15, 1947: The 7th Bombardment Wing was reactivated at RAF Kirchfelden-Eisenach under First Lieutenant General Hap Arnold as a provisional unit of Strategic Air Command (SAC). SAC's first operational mission was providing strategic bombardment services over Germany during World War II. It transitioned to Tactical Air Command (TAC) status on October 1st 1946 when SAC took over all combat squadrons within Tactical Air Command without notification to their commanding generals or headquarters units. This change removed direct control of these units from SAC Headquarters which had been centralized at Langley AFB Virginia since 1941.
Lafayette, Colorado is a small town in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lafayette was founded in 1878 by citizens of nearby Fort Lyon as a station on the Union Pacific Railroad. The town grew quickly and soon developed into a thriving agricultural center with several hundred businesses lining Main Street. In 1902, Lafayette was incorporated as a town and rapidly gained an reputation for its quality schools, churches, and civic organizations. The towns growth slowed during the Great Depression but resumed in the early 1940s when World War II brought new industries to Lafayette including defense contractors and aircraft manufacturers. During the 1950s and 1960s, Lafayette experienced rapid growth due to factors such asreek addition which led to development of new housing developments along Main Street and increased tourism from residents who relocated to Aurora or Lakewood for work opportunities.Today, Lafayette remains an important community with strong civic institutions that provide support for local agriculture and industry; however, it has also seen significant redevelopment in recent years including additional housing developments along Main Street.

Lafayette was a town in Colorado during the late 1800s. It is best known for its founder, Lafayette Adams, and the Battle of Larimer County Road 9. The battle occurred on October 12, 1876, when Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee attacked a detachment of U.S. Cavalry led by Lafayette Adams at Larimer County Road 9. Adams was killed in the engagement, and his unit was forced to retreat. In 1918, Lafayette became an incorporated town after it was granted city status by Colorado Springs City Council.

The area that now includes Lafayette was part of the Mexican territory of Alta California. When Mexico became a republic in1821, parts of Alta California were given to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On January 6, 1825, President James K. Polk approved a bill creating Colorado Territory from portions of Arizona and New Mexico Territory. The first U.S. resident in Colorado was Isaac Brock; he started a mining operation near Durango in 1828 and sold minerals to Americans and Mexicans alike. In 1830, Texas Annexed it as part of its effort to gain independence from Mexico
