The Coast Guard first arrived in Lafayette, Colorado on November 10, 1892. The original unit was the Pacific Coast Life Saving Squadron. On October 16, 1933, the First Coast Guard District was activated and became responsible for all aspects of coast guard service in central Colorado. In 1951, the First District was divided into two districts and these divisions were eventually merged to form the present day First District. The current Coast Guard Station in Lafayette is one of many that have been built over time in order to keep our coastal communities safe. This station has a variety of capabilities including: Search and rescue; maritime law enforcement; hazardous materials response; marine weather forecasting; and emergencies response. NMFS has also contracted with this station to provide environmental monitoring services as part of their Great Lakes Ecosystem Restoration Initiative program.

The Lafayette Coast Guard Station was established in 1912. The station was moved to its current location on the shore of Lafayette Bay in 1951. In 1927, the station became a radar station. In 1959, the station became a buoy tender In 1982, the Coast Guard Station designated an academy for cadets from Colorado and Wyoming. In 1992, the station became an icebreaker tender. In 1995, the Coast Guard Station relocated to its present location on Lafayette Bay after additions to their operations including a helicopter pad and a marina which provides waterbased activities for local students as well as providing transient housing for crewmembers when needed.
Lafayette, Colorado is a small town in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greeley–Aurora metropolitan area. Lafayette is located on the north side of Lake Bennett and has a ZIP code 80535. The town was founded in 1879 by Capt. George Prentice and his family as a ranching community on the shores of Lake Bennett. The name Lafayette comes from French for "valley," "plain," or "mountain." In 1881, General James Halleck moved his headquarters from Trinidad to Lafayette and named it in his honor. In 1907, Lafayette became an incorporated village; its first president was Fenton Wiltse. The original plat (map) for Lafayette included only two streets - Elm Avenue and Spring Street - but development soon followed with new buildings, a library, post office, grocery store, fire department and other public services. By 1920 there were over 100 residents living in structures that include four churches (Methodist Episcopal Zion Church; First Baptist Church; Presbyterian church; Methodist Episcopal Zion church), two schools (Lafayette Consolidated School District #2-A & #3-B), three businesses (the hardware store operated by Captain Prentice's son-in-law Arthur Lillard;JBH Drug Store ran by Jerald Eversham until it closed in 1984; Lafayettes Creamery opened in 1935) and several residences including those used by General Halleck during World War I when he served as Commanding General of United States Forces Europe headquartered at Camp Butler near Geneva Switzerland

The community took its name from General Lafayette who fought in America's first war against Mexico in 1812.
In 1906, Lafayette was renamed after Lt.-General John Fenton Butler who commanded U.S. forces during World War I and later served as United States Minister to Spain. In 1957, Lafayette incorporated as a village under the jurisdiction of Grand Junction and became an unincorporated community again with full voting rights until it joined the larger municipality in 1998.
Lafayette has been home to various businesses and organizations over its centuries including banks (First National Bank & Trust Company 1907-1976), real estate firms (Harding Realty Company 1912-1998), agricultural interests (Fenton Butler Dairy 1916-1997), professional athletes (National Football League players Harry Howells and Bob Cousy from 1922-1926; Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis from 1984-1989) and numerous local musicians such as Art Morgan (director/producer/astronaut/musician) and Ray Charles (founder of HCOE Records).
The current Mayor is Glen Watts with council members Rick Saylor, Don Kulakowski, Dave Karnes and Kathy Ziegler all serving terms through 2016.
