They sold prepared foods such as meals, cheese 1897, eggs 1895, flour 1896 (later changed to baking powder), butter 1893 and other groceries including coffee beans from France and Holland). In 1860, local citizens donated £200 towards construction of a public school which still stands today on Market Street near State Street (Lafayette's original location). The school was built using funds collected by civic leaders such as Mayor John Atherton and Capt.[John] Hutton (the founder of Denver). The school eventually became an opportunity for education for all residents of Lafayettesee township north of Broadway along present day Jefferson Boulevard/State Avenue/I-25W). Coffee first started being served at local cafes during prohibition in 1919 when it became illegal for alcohol sales within 1 mile of any public library or post office! Lafayette is a small town located in Arapahoe County, Colorado. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Centennial City area. Lafayette was founded in 1868 by General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment of U.S. Cavalry as a military camp on the banks of the Arkansas River north of present day Denver. After the Battle of Fallen Timbers (1862), which destroyed most of Indian Territory east of what is now Colorado Springs, Custer's men built an airfield and defensive line near Lafayette to help protect their supplies moving westward from Indian Territory. In 1906 Lafayette became an incorporated village with a one-room schoolhouse for students grades K-4; it reorganized in 1903 as a borough with a five-member board of education and full voting rights. After World War II, Lafayette grew rapidly due to its location within easy reach of Interstate 70, which connectedDenver and Boulder via I-25; as well as its heavy industry including aluminum smelting and printing plants that contributed to its nickname "TheCityofLight". In recent years, however, Lafayette has been struggling economically with falling job numbers and shrinking tax base; although it still retains some cultural attractions such as its annual country music festival (the first major event held in Centennial City), much activity takes place outside the town limits courthouse or downtown business district these days. One sign that things are not going too well for Lafayette is that there have been no new residents since 2000 - when the last Census counted 1,842 people living here - despite growth throughout portions adjacent to town over that period including 571 residences built between 2007 and 2011 alone! Despite this lacklustre development trend overall, some locals continue to vigorously advocate for making changes both inside and outside townlimits so as to bring more vitality back into this sleepy corner ol'Colorado Springs!
