Lafayette, Colorado is a small town in the Eagle County region of Colorado. The population was 1,653 at the 2000 census and 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Highway 6A about 20 miles south of Aspen. The area that would become Lafayette was first inhabited by Native American tribes including the Arapaho, who were displaced by Kit Carson's 1876–1877 expedition when he founded Mesa Verde National Monument in what is now Larimer County. In 1881, Lafayette was named after General Lafayette Bonaparte, who had led French forces during the Mexican-American War and later served as United States Minister to France. In 1902, a post office called Lafayette was established in Logan County; it closed in 1913 due to postage stamps being invalid for towns with a population over 100 citizens (Lafayette had only 50 residents at the time). In 1907, construction began on what would become Aspen Municipal Airport; it opened in 1914 and remains an active commercial airport today. The community became known as "The Mills" because of its large cotton fields which remain today as part of Aspen's agricultural economy. Aspen grew increasingly popular as a resort destination for wealthy Americans during World War II; business increased dramatically thanks to expanding airline travel and demand for housing near Aspen's ski resorts. However, when Allied bombing raids began against Germany in 1944 their effects turned deadly; By 1945 flattened homes and businesses lay scattered around Aspen like discarded pieces of furniture while destruction continued throughout downtown area which lay largely untouched save for some minor damage from looters following the war’s end. Lafayette, Colorado is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Weld County and home to the Lafayette School District. Lafayette was founded in 1881 by James A. McAteer and his wife Jane McAteer. The McAteers were farmers who moved from New York to the rancho near modern-day Lafayette in 1878. James A. McAteer had been a soldier in Mexico during the Mexican–American War and he knew how to manage land and build homes. He also learned that irrigation could be used for farming and cattleraising, which he exported back to New York City as a new way of growing crops and manufacturing goods. This led to the McAteers being pioneers in agriculture in southern Weld County.
