The Shipyard Museum began exhibiting artifacts from American sea captains who operated out of Lafayette during this time period in 1995-1996 under the auspices of USS Constitution Museum Committee (USS Constitution Museum Committee). This committee was created to commemorate and preserve both the USS Constitution museum fleet that resided at Navy Yard No 2 aft main gate from 1896 until their closure in 2002 after 68 years active service; as well as other warships related items housed at various Naval Yards across America during this time period including: Brooklyn Navy Yard (1890-1924), Miami Naval Station (1925-1997), Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (1928-present) & more! It was intended that Lafayette would be a coal mining community, but it never became a reality. The first post office in Lafayette opened on July 1, 1870. The first store opened in 1874. In 1875, the town added a telephone line and began to build its own schools and churches. In 1902, Lafayette incorporated as a city and changed its name to Denver. In 1912, it merged with Golden to form the Denver–Golden metropolitan area. In 1957, Lafayette voted to secede from Colorado and join the United States District Court for Colorado inDenver.
