The Lafayette National Guard mission statement is “to protect our nation’s national security and committed to the principles of service, dedication and teamwork.” The unit was organized on December 14th, 1912 as the Colorado National Guard. The first men in uniforms were assigned to Company “A” 2nd Regiment of Infantry. On January 6th, 1916 the 1st Regiment was redesignated as the 1st Brigade, Colorado National Guard and became a regiment within the Army. On July 15th, 1933 the brigade became an armor division under command of Tenth Infantry Division with Headquarters at Fort Carson Colorado. In 1945 when it was disbanded due to World War II ended we lost all our regiments including company A (2nd Colfax) which had been stationed in Ft Carson since 1912-14. In 1955 when Coloradan citizens ratified a state constitutional amendment providing for a system of military service by citizens I assume that most members of the Lafayette National Guard must have been drafted into active duty during World War II or have served involuntarily since then. I cannot determine how many individuals currently serve in or are serving in the militia because there is no published records kept regarding such things as enlisted/draft status or length of service. There have been numerous events which took place within one mile radius around Lafayette where individuals could be mobilized for defense purposes including: On October 28th 1871 two companies from Fort Lyon were called out for drill at Happy Valley Schoolhouse about four miles northwest of town near present day Westminster . 150 men drilled there that day andeventually 4 other companies joined them from nearby towns such as Loveland, Longmont, Windsor and Evansville . This force eventually numbered 805 soldiers giving their name to what would become known as "The Great Boulder Siege" This event signals something much larger happening just outside town limits; militias began being called out regularly by local farmers for protection against Native Americans raiding their villages east of THE BOLTZBURG Mountains
