The Lafayette Naval Shipyard was founded in 1885 by Rear Admiral John P. Ryan as a result of the America's first naval vessel, USS Constitution, being launched at that yard. The shipyard quickly became one of the most important yards in the United States Navy and produced many of America's leading warships including USS Constitution (1895), USS Maine (1901), USS Rhode Island ( 1907 ), and USS Wyoming (1915). Naval ships moved from the shipyards to coastal ports all across America during World War II as part of the Navy's strategy for warfighting using submarines, surface combatants, and bombers. In 1943, Lafayette Naval Shipyard built the first submarine-launched ballistic missile submarine in history when it constructed SS Nautilus. The plant was located adjacent to Purdue University which gave rise to another nickname for Lafayette: "The Univac Campus". In 1954, Lafayette Naval Shipyard took over production of Polaris missiles from Convair Corporation. This led to Lafayette becoming one of only two yards in the US Navy that could produce nuclear-armed submarines. After years of development and construction at Lafayette Naval Shipyard, Polaris finally became operational on May 5th, 1957 when USS Eldridge attacked Cuban forces off Key West with her first nuclear-powered subLCSG - also known as "Polaris I" or "Polaris II". Lafayette Naval Shipyards closed its doors in 1992 but reopened in 2003 as a museum focused on naval Ships and Sailors from around the world with an emphasis on maritime history and technology. The name Lafayette was derived from Lafayette Hill, which is located in the town. The first people to live in Lafayette were the O'Donnells. They came from County Clare, Ireland in 1827 and started a family here. In 1869, John Dolan set up shop here as an agricultural Implement Manufacturer. He was followed by his son James Dolan who built the first substantial house in Lafayette in 1886. The townsite that now includes Lafayette was platted by Edward Hanks and named after General Marquis de Lafayette who fought for America during the War of 1812. In 1902, post office clerk Leland Sothern opened the first telephone line to this area and it became known as "Lafayette Valley Telephone Company" until 1959 when it became part of Colorado Telecommunications Corporation In 1907-08 school District No 2 established its second high school which served students at two local churches (First Methodist Episcopal Church and Second Presbyterian Church). When School District No 3 merged into district No 2 in 1958 all students attending School District 2 schools were transferred to School District 3's new high school building on South Main Street until 1984 when they were again transferred when district No 4 merged into district No 3.
