Lafayette is a town in Arapahoe County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Area. The community began as two settlements: Lafayette and Cripple Creek. Lafayette was founded by Col. John Eppler in 1885 on land he had acquired from the Larimer Indian Reservation. Lafayette became a county seat in 1886 and an incorporated village in 1912. In 1932, Lafayette became a city when it merged with Aurora to form the Aurora-Denver Metro area. The first post office opened in Lafayette on July 24, 1885, and remained open until it closed on December 12, 1902. The original building still stands today as part of the Municipal Building complex located within downtown Aurora. Lafayette has been home to several prominent people including Ulysses S Grant and James Buchanan Woodson Jr..
