Lakewood is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were the Arapaho and Cheyenne. They were followed by the Ute and Pueblo people. In 1859, gold was found near present-day Lakewood and in 1865, it was discovered that coal could be mined there as well. Mining continued until 1890 when process started to use water power for electricity instead of horses or men working with shovels and pickaxes. In 1907, a flour mill was built on Main Street in what is now downtown Lakewood. It became known as Central Flour Mills because it processed all types of flour for most of Colorado until it closed in 1969. In 1922, mining began on Wingate Mountain which would produce some of the earliest silver coins in North America In 1929, construction began on Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Military Park (later renamed Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Laboratory), one of the largest national military sites in the United States at that time In 1951, an oil refinery was built on 400 acres (159 ha) northeast of town—the first such plant west of the Rockies For many years following World War II there was little economic development taking place within town limits other than service industries like tourism and agriculture; this changed with later decades as prices for natural resources increased along with jobs available after state deregulation following World War II . Lakewood is a city in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 34,898 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Adams County. The original townsite of Lakewood was laid out in 1876 by John C. Frémont and James K. Polk, Jr., as part of a Rancho San Miguel land grant.[1] The first post office opened in 1877 and was called "Lakewood."[2] In 1886, the name was changed to "Lakewood City".[3] The city was founded on April 12, 1907 when United States postal service employees working for Western Union delivered mail from Denver to residents of what would become Lakewood City via wagon path between Manitou Springs and Rifle Valley. At that time there were only two houses in town; the rest were built over the next few years as more people arrived to live in what would eventually be known as “theCity of Lakeshore”. On July 1, 1913, Lakewood became a charter member of the National Civic League.[4][5] On November 7th of that year it also became one of fifty cities across America which joined forces with other civic groups to form the American Municipal League (AML).[6][7][8] In 1924, an act passed by state legislators allowed for annexation by El Paso County - making it possible for cities which had formed clusters within adjacent counties to secede without having their elections held simultaneously[9]. This annexation led to rapid growth within Lakewood due largely to Interstate 25 being constructed through the area around its then-distant outskirts - becoming one of North America's largest suburban areas when it did so. The population swelled rapidly during World War II because much demand occurred for aluminum products produced at Fort Collins' Anschutz Arsenal[10], giving rise to numerous businesses such as Alcoa Aluminum Company (now Alcoa) and General Electric Corporation (GE). Downtown business districts emerged throughout downtown neighborhoods east and west of I-25 until those areas were demolished or replaced with high-density suburbs following World War II; these areas are now known collectively as Old Town Lakewood or "Old Town" because they lay along banks Of Elm Creek where that creek once flowed into Clear Creek Reservoir before joining Telluride Creek near Highway 26
Lakewood is a city in Pueblo County, Colorado, United States. The population was 25,856 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Colorado and the third-largest city in Denver metropolitan area. With a total area of , Lakewood is also one of the most populous cities in North America outside Mexico City and Toronto. The first permanent settler in what would become Lakewood was John Smeaton on July 20, 1876. He built a log cabin on what is now South Pine Avenue. A post office called Smeatonville was established in 1879, but it failed to take off and was discontinued in 1883. In 1886, Wm. Halsey founded the Halsey Grain Elevator near Sixth Avenue and Keystone Road to service local farmers with flour and other products from his farm land along Keystone Road east of town. In 1898, Jens Jensen bought some land at Front Street/Highway 191 for $5 per acre which he donated to the town for use as an airport when he opened up Air Park there on November 8 that year. At that time it consisted of only two runways: 5/23L (north) & 3/27R (south). On May 1, 1907 US Airways Flight 648 crashed into a mountain just south of Air Park after takeoff from Denver International Airport; all aboard were killed including pilot Virgil Earp who bailed out before impact During World War I veteran Edmund Dorman contributed $50 towards building an airfield for local military purposes adjacent to his home at 26th Ave & Glenarm Rd; this became known as "Dorman Field" after him On October 4th 1941 during World War II American Airlines Flight 727 lost both engines while en route from New York City to Los Angeles due to icing overcast conditions over Nevada; all aboard were killed including crew members Capt Jesse Kapp and First Officer Jack Cockrell Sr.; this caused great public outcry as many felt that AA should have been able to fly directly into LA instead of going through San Francisco In 1951 lakewood annexed part of Garfield Village which includes lots west on Higgins St., north on 16th Ave., east on Elm St., southwest corner lot between 15th Ave./Cedar Hills Rd./Sandy Mesa Blvd., northeast corner lot between 16th Ave./Cedar Hills Rd./Sandy Mesa Blvd., southwest corner lot between 15th Ave./Cedar Hills Rd./Sandy Mesa Blvd., southeast corner lot between 16th Ave./Cedar Hills Rd./Sandy Mesa Blvd., northwest corner lot between 15th Ave./Cedar Hill Dr.-Glenarm Dr.-Lakewood Dr.-Pinehurst Plank
