Lakewood is a town in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Boulder metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Lakewood were farmers who came to the area during the late 1800s. Lakewood is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were Native American chiefs and their families who followed the mainstem of the Arkansas River south from its sources in eastern Colorado for many miles. The first European to come across the area was Pedro de Alvarado, traveling upriver from Mexico City on his way to find new land for Spain. Heading northeast along present day I-25, he came upon an open water place called Pueblo Grande (Great Pueblo), which he named Santa Fe because it looked like a city with high walls. Spanish settlers established a post there in 1676 and began calling this place La Veta (the Place). In 1864 General James Halleck ordered Major John Custer's 5th Cavalry Regiment to cut off Fort Lyon near modern Aspen after they had failed to capture two Indian leaders known as "The Crazy Horse" and "The Little Big Horn." This event became known as Custer's Battle because of accounts that say Sergeant Floyd Lincoln killed all but one of those accompanying him including Chief Joseph Arapaho. In 1886 Edward Everett Hale owned some property northwest of present day Lakewood and decided to build a small cabin on it for himself and his wife Rebecca Backus Hale. They naming their cabin North Fork Cabin after Everett's north fork of the Arkansas River where he intended to cross when he reached his destination. By 1907 much of Douglas County had been annexed by Denver making Lakewood part of that city limits although no municipal buildings were built there until 1912 when the first school building was erected next door to North Fork Cabin.- Construction on streets started in 1916 with Route 66 running through town

In 1922, Colorado State University (CSU) began its first undergraduate program in education in Lakewood; it would later become one of the largest universities in America. In 1945, CSU merged with Denver State University to form CU Boulder; this merger would also create the second largest university in Colorado after Colorado Springs University (now NorthernColorado University). The early 21st century has seen some significant changes to Lakewood: In 2007, when city officials agreed to sell land for an expressway through town that would connect Interstate 25 to Interstate 80 outside of town limits, they also agreed to make small changes to zoning laws that allowed development on portions of that land for commercial use only if certain conditions were met including increased traffic levels from nearby I-25 travel. This Expressway project is still being planned as part of overall city redevelopment efforts which are expected to bring more than 3 million dollars into the coffers over 10 years!
