Lakewood is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Area. The town was founded in 1872 by cattle and wagon drivers who named it for the wooded hills around it. In 1896, Lakewood became a city with a population of 15,000 people. The first mayor was John Hargrave. The original downtown district in downtown Lakewood was destroyed by fire on July 6th, 1916; this event is also celebrated as "the day the city began". This fire destroyed most of what had been built in that area since 1892 when the town was founded. However, plans were made to rebuild and this happened starting in 1917 with construction of what is now known as "the Main Street District". The rebuilding project included many new buildings such as an indoor arena which holds up to 4500 people called the Civic Center (now called First Union Station). From 1957 until 1987 all public services including libraries and schools were operated out of two large warehouses on Race Street east of I-25 known as Big Timber Services and Race & Storage Warehouse due to their size and location near Interstate 25

Lakewood is a city in Colorado, United States. The population was 26,826 at the 2010 census. Lakewood is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to see and rap over the now named Colorado River were Spanish conquistadors on their way from Mexico City to San Diego in 1524. They named the river after Santiago Bernal de Alvarado (1537-1619), Viceroy of New Spain and conqueror of California and Mexico. In 1776, while General George Washington was besieging Montrose, his army encamped near what would become Lakewood when he discovered that a small but significant body of water lay between him and Utah across the narrow ridge called present day Glenwood Springs—a discovery that led to what would eventually be called Rocky Mountain National Park. In 1859, gold was found in nearby Arapaho County and soon mining operations began in what is now Lakewood proper; by 1875, 1 million dollars had been extracted from various mines within one year. By 1900 silver had also been mined there as well as copper and lead ore; however it wasn't until 1906 when natural gas started flowing through an opening formed during an earthmoving project that businesses sprung up around what became known as "the gusher" with firms such as American Gas Light & Coke Company (later British Gas) starting up around this time including many which still operate today like Eastern Air Lines – currently parent company Delta Airlines – having its main base at Colorado's largest airport -Denver International Airport-. In 1924–25 Denver Mayor William Donaldson proposed development of a park on then unincorporated land east of town along Cherry Creek which became Grant Park; construction began that same year following a $3 million gift from industrialist Andrew Carnegie who saw potential for use of his land for community purposes following the death of his wife Laura Stevens Carnegie in 1911. Other notable donations during these years include $2 million given by oilman Harry Crane to establish Denver's first public school system (nowDenver Public Schools) in 1923 followed by another $1 million bequeathed by Waco resident James Elam Keller to help fund new high school building plans for Aurora also east of town on current Thornton Boulevard; both buildings were completed in 1926 and 1928 respectively becoming Lincoln High School before annexation by Lakewood later that same year making it home to Central State College although classes continued until 1942 when Central State merged with Larimer County Community College becoming Ridgedale/Lakewood Community Colleges District 2 where they remain today with over 100 campuses throughout Greater Denver area including one located inside University Of Colorado Boulder campus making it one largest community college district west OF Kansas City!
