Lakewood, Colorado is a census-designated place in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lakewood" originated from the Big Lake area and was given to it by the Ute people because of its many small lakes. The first settler in what is now Lakewood was George Armstrong Custer who died on July 24, 1876 while trying to cross Big Lake near present day Longmont. That same year he and his party were exploration partners with John Evans on their first foray into Rocky Mountain National Park. In 1884 oil wells were drilled in what are now parts of Aurora and Thornton and tankers began carrying crude oil from North Dakota to Lakewood for refining at nearby Pueblo West Oil Field. By 1890 there were over 100 businesses in town with a payroll of $1 million annually. In 1907 a new water tower was built brick by brick on State Street east of downtown that became known as "The Water Tower." During World War I local defense troops served in various roles including guarding key areas around Denver; they later left when hostilities ceased. In 1919 residents organized themselves as an unincorporated community called Garden City which amalgamated with other towns within Weld County during the 1920s due to competition from larger cities like Denver for business opportunities and growth potential. As more people moved into the area Camellia Heights/Bellevue Manor developed north of I-25 between Belleview Boulevard (now Douglas Road) and Mesa Drive (now Wadsworth Boulevard). Lakewood, Colorado is a city in western Colorado, United States. The population was 9,735 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1867 as the town of Lakewood East, it became a city on January 1, 2002. Lakewood is located in Hearst County and straddles the edge of what was once the eastern boundary of Rocky Mountain National Park. At its peak in 1920, Lakewood had a population of over 50,000 people. Today, it has a population under 10,000 people and retains much of its historical charm and architecture. The city was named for John Wesley Powell when he discovered and mapped the Laramide Mountains near present-day Lakewood in 1869 while exploring the area for new mining claims. The beginnings of Lakewood can be traced back to 1867 when two men named Hiram Sibley and James Kapp founded the town of Lakewood East on land they purchased from President Andrew Johnson for $236 worth of goods and services. It wasn't until 1886 that an act were passed by Congress recognizing lakes within Rocky Mountain National Park as national forests; this act also created US Forest Service jurisdiction over all county boundaries within Rocky Mountain National Park eastward to 24 miles (38 km). As early as 1895 residents began petitioning city officials to name their community after John Wesley Powell – then director general of Ulysses S Grant's Department of Agriculture – who had discovered and mapping most importantly nearby Boulder Creek during his 1861 expedition up Pikes Peak ski resort (). In 1903–1904 voters approved changing the name to Lakewood after local pioneer Judge Augustus Harmon (). However, eventually City Manager George Ahern determined that "the proper appellation would be Water Tower" due to water tower facilities built soon afterwards across Third Street from City Hall (now Sixth Avenue) which still serve today as one point source for both drinking water and irrigation purposes (). Lakewood is a city in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 30,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of theDenver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Lakewood was John Day in 1868. He built a small cabin on the east side of town and named it "Day's Cabin." Day established himself as a farmer and trader in the area until his death in 1876. His son-in-law, George Wickersham, took over Day's business and renamed it Wickersham & Company after himself. In 1895, he sold his interest to Halsey Laughlin for $5,000 cash. By 1916, Laughlin had acquired all other shares and became sole owner and head operator of Wickersham & Company. In 1920s there were several attempts by developers to build homes on undeveloped land near downtown Lakewood but all were rejected because of lack of money or zoning changes that could have allowed them to be built without any public opposition or involvement from residents. One such attempt was led by developer Irving Kapp who purchased 3 acres (1 km²) east of downtown from Laughlin for $10,000 in 1924 but never got around to building anything due to financial difficulties caused by the Great Depression
