Lakewood, Colorado is a town in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Lakewood was John Smith in 1776. He named it after his home of Lochleven on the Isle of Skye. However, by 1802, all references to Lochleven had been removed from maps and replaced with Lakewood. The first post office was established in 1892. The present incarnation of Lakewood was founded on November 3, 1912 when the towns of East Aurora and Northglenn were merged into one municipality. At that time there were just 10 residents in both towns combined – today’s population reaches over 2300 people! One popular annual event in Lakewood is the Christmas Parade which starts at 7 PM each year and ends about 11 PM near Main Street square downtown (just south of I-25). This event has become so well known that it has been moved from December to April as part of citywide celebrations!

In 1954, Lakewood joined Aurora as one of six municipalities within Aurora School District No. 2. In November 2006, residents voted in a referendum to allow for annexation by Park City into Douglas County for a total population of 12,500 residents within two years; this request was denied by county officials because Park City had already reached its limit for annexation votes).
