Lakewood is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Aurora-Aurora-Centennial School District. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lakewood were Spanish explorers in 1540. A party led by Hernán Cortés went searching for new land in what is now Colorado in 1547 and discovered the valley of the Animas River. The area that would become Lakewood was first settled by Irish immigrants in 1864 as a result of gold mining operations on the nearby Poudre River. In 1886, local citizens petitioned Congress to create a township within Weld County for them to exist under the name "Lakewood". On December 12, 1893, Congress passed an act creating Lakewood Township and providing for its organization; it was incorporated on March 14, 1895. In 1922, construction began on Glencoe Dam which forms much of today's downtown streetscape and greatly increased water availability for irrigation purposes across much of central Weld County; this event helped spur development throughout the community over time. At one point during World War II there were more than 100 homes built near Glencoe Dam due largely to wartime demand for housing shortages across much of Colorado after the bombing raids conducted by USAAF planes against German targets in Europe had created an acute housing shortage statewide. After years of growth and change within Lakewood itself (due largely to its location within close-to-an urban setting), annexation by Aurora occurred in 1984 which made Lakewood both official town status and home to more than 1,000 residents with full voting rights alongside Aurora residents themselves until that merger became effective January 1st 2006 when all city services were merged into Aurora proper pursuant to Town Redevelopment Act #2-2006 chaptered into state statute (the same legislation through which Aurora annexed Lakewood). As part of municipal restructuring following annexation such as enlarged parks/sports fields/community center/civic center/new high school/swimming pool etc., crime rates have decreased significantly while average household incomes have grown alarmingly over time despite having less access to quality public goods such as education or healthcare opportunities like other towns experiencing similar growth rates outside those aforementioned mergers – a trend generally known as gentrification or "the American dream" among some locals who see it displacing lower-income families from their original neighborhoods while maintaining high levels of single family homeownership relative thereto – leading some activists associated with locally based left wing group Indivisible Laurie Sullivan has called attention to this issue nationally[1].
