Lakewood is a city in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 43,528 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Colorado and the second-largest city in Northern Colorado. The name "Lakewood" comes from an early settler's Topo Map of 1875 which showed a large body of water between Lakewood and La Veta. The name was given to the town by James Waddell, who had been living near what would become Lakewood when he surveyed it for gold in 1876. Waddell named his discovery after his then wife's birthplace, LakewOODeam Township on Manitoulin Island in Ontario County, Canada. The townsite that became part of Lakewood was platted on December 10, 1892 by Zenon Bemis and Hyrum Sawyer under their names of North Park and South Park; they were both residents of Greeley at the time. (In 1893 Zenon Bemis patented a process for manufacturing pail lye.) The first post office called "Lakewood" was established on February 14, 1893; it served as the junction between two other towns: North Park and Aurora. On October 1, 1895, Aurora consolidated with Greeley to form one municipality with a population of 507 people. Growth in north western Colorado during the late 19th century led to increased demand for land east of Interstate 25 and south of Highway 6A (the most important artery connecting Denver and Larimer County). This demand led to several ranching disputes along what is now Westheimer Boulevard between Hearst Ranch (now part of Glen Ellyn) to the south and Centennial Farms to the north; these disputes are still remembered today by local ranchers who call themselves "The Warring Fords". To meet this growth potential new towns were approved along Interstate 25 within minutes or less of each other – Jerome (1901), Thornton (1902), Commerce City (1903), Longmont (1904), Aspermont( 1905), Arapahoe Junction( 1907), Spanish Fork( 1908)and finally Watertown( 1909). By 1912 there were ten municipalities with populations over 10,000 people located within four miles of I-25 including Aurora( 20,,000 people ), Westminster(& 30,,000 people ), Golden (35,,000 people ), Thornton (& 40,,000 people )and Arapahoe Junction(& 50,,000 people ). In 1916 three more towns – Brighton Beach Suite #2 & 3 off Airport drag Rd., Deer Lodge (#1 off I–25 east side) & Nederland Springs (#2 off I–25 west side) – joined Watertown making its total population 100, 000+. During World War II many factories closed down due to rationing but because so many Americans had jobs outside war production could continue without any impact on society or quality control standards inside cities such as Denver where resources were plentiful

Lakewood was founded on November 3, 1887 by James W. McGee and his wife Emma Crouse from east of Lakewood in Arapahoe County. In 1912, when Park City became an incorporated town, Lakewood annexed Strawberry Hill. On July 2, 1936, the city of Aurora merged with Lakewood to form one large city with a population of over 100,000 people. In 1984 Lakeshore Mall closed down due to Chapter 11 bankruptcy and its owner Sears Holdings filed for bankruptcy protection again amassing over $2 billion in assets including Sears Home & Hardware stores which were sold to Kmart Corporation for $1 billion less than their initial value; this event has been cited as one reason why downtown Aurora gentrified during the 1980s and 1990s
