The Colorado National Guard was created in 1876 as a militia to protect the state’s borders and resources. The Guard has grown over time, and today it is an important part of the state’s Defense Forces. The first national guard gift was a rifle from New York City Mayor John F. Kennedy in 1962. The Guard also received a cannon from President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. In 1998, the Guard received its own set of equipment, including tanks, helicopters and Humvees. Lakewood, Colorado is a small town located in western Colorado. The first post office was established in 1875, and the town name was changed from Hayden to Lakewood in 1907. It has since grown and annexed several other towns, most notably Aspen. In 2000, Lakewood became the fastest-growing city in the United States for population growth according to U.S. census data. Lakewood was founded on November 3, 1875 by James Wickenburg and others as Hayden Creek Ranch about six miles west of Aspen on the north bank of Clearwater River near modern day Keystone Dam. The area now includes portions of both cities and is home to over 21,000 residents as of 2010. The name "Lakewood" originated from the fact that there were two coves called "Lakewood" - one near Aspen proper and one east of it on Clearwater Valley Road - both significant for their location: clear water at one end (near present day Keystone Dam) while rich bottomlands provided cover from grazing animals during periods of drought away from Aspen's high mountains. While many people believe that the place where today's town stands was actually named Hayden Creek Ranch after James Wickenburg himself, no documentary evidence exists to support this claim; however, it likely honors him as its namesake). In 1907 when Hayden Creek Ranch merged with nearby Aspen into what would become known as Lakewood Township, all but three residents of Hayden Creek Ranch relocated there along with their livestock in order to form a new township whose boundaries reflected those of then-unincorporated areas southward including present-day Aspen neighborhoods such as Lakeside Drive and Deer Park Drive - forming what would ultimately be known as an integrated suburbia withinAspen limits between which residents could travel without fear of being encountered by anyone not resident within their own municipality or borders (a practice still extant today in some respects due to zoning regulations)). Today’s downtown core – which contains civic center/government offices (including City Hall), light industrial buildings used primarily for manufacturing (manufacturing has been declining throughout much of North America since World War II thanks largely to legislation passed during WWII forbidding numerous types of low impact building investment), several dozen restaurants/cafes/bars/breweries clustered around two large central squares apiece – dates back only to 1978 when development began inside what had once been an open field adjacent directly eastward Improvements made thereafter reflect advances made elsewhere within municipal boundaries resulting generally in more compacted shapes and increased density overall despite continuing population growth rates well above pre-1978 levels evidenced by recent annexations by additional neighboring municipalities).
Lakewood is located in the Eagle County, Colorado area and was founded on July 20, 1876. The town was named for General James Lakewood who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was opened in 1877 and the first school was established in 1879. In 1889, a sawmill was built and soon became a primary industry of the town. The population of Lakewood grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1907 it had reached over 5,000 residents.During World War II, much of the manufacturing activity in Eagle County took place within the boundaries of Lakewood and its factories produced goods for both military usage as well as civilian applications such as automobiles, radios, aircraft engines, munitions etc. Post-war economic growth brought about new development including an elementary school and hospital being built within the limits of town while other businesses cropped up to take advantage of increased demand for services generated by postwar boomtowns like Aurora and Westminster. By 1968 however, only 2% of estimated total housing units were owner-occupied with most properties now used by employees or students at nearby universities or colleges. The late 1960s through early 1970s were marked by various high profile events that touched onLakewood including two major accidents that killed scores of people along Interstate 25 near downtown; oneoccurred when a construction worker fell from a bridge onto I-25 below; another occurred when two trains collided head-on on railroad tracks just east/west of town center killing 33 people and injuring more than 100 others
