Lakewood, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 1,579 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salida–Aurora–Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is today Lakewood were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near the present-day village site. The first white man to visit what is now Lakewood was Capt. James Hutton on July 10, 1819 while exploring the area for conditions that would allow him to prospect for silver in what are now Jefferson County and Park County. He named his find "Hutton's Hole." In 1824, a group of Mormons from Nauvoo, Illinois started a trade post called Fort Bridger on an overlook overlooking the confluence of Clear Creek and North Platte River (now known as South Platte River). They built a stockade around their post which served as their base of operations until 1829 when they abandoned it due to hostile Apache attacks. In 1865, Brigham Young organized the LDS Church here and founded Salt Lake City where he set up his headquarters. Afternoon services were initially held at Fort Bridger before moving to Temple Square in 1830 where services continued until 1978 when they moved back to Bridger Field because of construction projects nearby.
