Lakewood, Colorado is a city in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 25,812 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1876 by the merger of two small towns: Arapahoe and Asotin. It is named after the body of water on which it sits. Lakewood grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as a result of heavy industry in what is now southern San Miguel County. In 1922, the city annexed neighboring Village of Northglenn which had a population of 2,500. The annexation increased Lakewood's population to over 30,000 by 1930. During World War II, military units from Fort Carson moved to Lakewood and helped support local businesses during the war effort. Afterward, much of the manufacturing that had contributed to growth stopped because wartime production activities were replaced by new technologies such as plastics and electronic components. However, housing development continued until the mid-1970s whenDenver gentrified much of south central Denver and began pushing out older areas for high-end residential developments called "The Loop." In recent years there has been significant redevelopment along Interstate 25 in eastcentral Lakewood with mixed results due to traffic congestion and CO2 emissions from automobiles driving into town center while producing little economic value other than large expensive parking lots around town center
