Lakewood, Colorado is a city in Denver County, Colorado, United States. The population was 915 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Aurora–Lakewood–Denver metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1885 by John Wesley Elkins and incorporated on November 3rd, 1889. In 1916 Lakewood became the first municipality in Denver County to issue its own postage stamps, which it continued to do until 1959 when all municipalities within Denver County were merged into the new Denver City Council. The first coffee shop in Lakewood was called The Coffee House on Wadsworth Avenue and it opened its doors on December 7th, 1885. At that time there were just a few small cafes like this throughout Denver County and most people drank tea or coffee because those were the only other options for breakfast or lunch at that time. The first Americans to set foot in what is now Lakewood were stagecoach travelers who reached it in 1868 while journeying from Pueblo to Loveland. After years of development as a farming and ranching center, the city's growth was arrested by a combination of factors: 1) an increasingly large area for Denver to annex due to county boundaries; 2) high construction costs associated with new Interstate 25 and other road projects; and 3) Boulder's claim on most jobs available near the city limits. In the early 2000s, local officials began developing plans for redeveloping downtown into a mixed-use markettown anchored by two restaurants and two bars/ nightclubs —the first such venture in that part of the state since Larimer County abandoned its own attempt at redevelopment in the late 1990s. With annexation by Aurora making downtown more accessible from all sides, progress continued apace until 2008 when an EFTC fire destroyed much of downtown's fabric —a blow that effectively killed off any momentum for redevelopment. Lakewood, Colorado is a small town in southern Jefferson County, Colorado. It was founded on the western edge of the Rocky Mountains in 1876 by farmers who followed the San Juan River. The population was 1,500 at its peak in 1906. The townsite was laid out on an open meadow and named for the wooded hills to the east. By 1907, there were only 10 people living in Lakewood and it had a post office and three stores. The first school in Lakewood opened in 1886. In 1912, a new high school was built and named for Dr. Edwin Halsey of Denver who had been instrumental in developing education strategies for Western Colorado's coal fields. In 1916, Lakewood became home to its first library which served as the nucleus of what would become the present library system. The first shopping center opened near downtown in 1961 when Interstate 25 crossed over from neighboring Adams County into Jefferson County and bypassed Lakewood entirely
