Littleton is a small town in Colorado. It was founded in 1867 by James W. Little and his wife, Fannie. The population of Littleton was 996 in 2010. Littleton is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Littleton is located on the eastern edge of Adams County and bordered by Aschmann County to the north and east, Arapahoe County to the south, and Thornton County to the west. The city proper has a total area of , making it one of Colorado's smallest cities at . It occupies most of what used to be called Elmira Township (now part of Aurora), although there are several smaller communities within Littleton itself as well as along I-25 and US Highway 287. The first Europeans to visit what is now Littleton were traders from New York who passed through in 1688 on their way fromondaga country in upstate New York to trade with the local Pueblo people. After landing at Kirtland Island they noted that "a great tract [of land] lay before them on both sides of the river" which they named for James W., Sr., then proprietor or headman of a band or village known as Fort George: For two years he had been living among these friendly natives but when attacked by an outlying party led by Captain John Smith, he fled into hiding until reinforcements arrived and drove off the attackers; this event began what became known as "the Great Indian War." In 1794 James W.'s son William came downriver with trader Daniel Boone on his exploration trip leading various early European explorations through central Rocky Mountain country; upon reaching present-day Park City he made camp near present day Elmira Township just south of where little later Big Thompson's Store would be established opposite Interstate 25 exit #6 (just east of today's old High School). Littleton is a small town in Colorado, located in the San Juan County seat of Pueblo. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,611. The name Littleton comes from its location at the foot of Mount Lofty and is likely derived from La Salle's words "LITTLE TONITEH" meaning "upper mountain". The first European to visit Littleton was José de Arista on July 22, 1814 while traveling through what is now San Juan County. On October 26, 1821 Major General Antonio López y Costilla founded a Spanish mission called Nuestra Señora del Rosario Chapel in present-day Littleton. In 1825 Reverend James Kellar and his wife arrived in Littleton with their children John and Eliza Kellar. James Kellar became pastor at Nuestra Señora del Rosario Chapel before moving to Arapahoe Falls in 1836 where he also served as postmaster and treasurer for Pueblo. In 1868, when Denver was founded, part of Pueblo county (later renamed Jefferson County) was annexed into the new city boundary making Littleton withinDenver's borders. By 1880 there were only 1,000 residents living in Littleton out of a total population of 10,000 people in Colorado Springs. On October 3rd 1860 an act providing for school instruction for white children between the ages of six and twelve years old was passed by the Colorado General Assembly; it became effective on November 1st 1861 and 8th graders were taught reading and writing from that date until January 1st 1865 when state law changed to establish high schools instead. One hundred thirty students attended the first class held at Arapahoe Falls High School on March 14th 1861 under direction of Superintendent Julius Vogt who had replaced Augustus Kelley as principal at Arapahoe Falls High School after Kelley resigned due to health concerns related to tuberculosis which he contracted while serving as superintendent at Larimer Academy near Aspen). Although not all students enrolled in local public schools received education opportunities mandated by state law (eighty percent or more white boys attending private academies or religious schools), this early attempt by Denverites to educate their own citizens marks one important step forward inWARD progressivism during those earliest days of DENVER'S SIGNIFICANT POLICE MILITARY INDUSTRY
