The Littleton-based Army National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1775. The unit was activated as an infantry regiment on April 15, 1885 and served in the Mexican American War, the American Civil War, and World War I. The Littleton-based 7th Infantry Regiment was mustered into service in 1917 as part of the First World War effort and fought in France, Belgium, and Italy before being sent to Mesopotamia in 1918. After hostilities ended in 1919, the regiment returned home to serve stints at Fort Carson (1921–24), Fort Bliss (1925–31), Fort Sill (1932–35), and Doniphan Barracks (1936). In 1940, the 7th Infantry Regiment was reorganized as a battalion and stationed at Camp Grant untilactivated on October 1st of that year for participation in the Invasion of Normandy. In 1946, it became an organic battalion again with headquarters located at Elmendorf AFB until disbanded on December 31st 1957.
Littleton is a town located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 24,812 at the 2010 census. Littleton is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Littleton was John Fitzpatrick in 1876. Fitzpatrick built a cabin on the east side of South Park Drive and named it "Fitzpatrick's Ferry". The first post office in Littleton was established in 1879, and the first store opened in 1880. By 1886, the population had reached 10 people. The incorporation of Littleton took place on July 1, 1889. Located just south of Interstate 25 and north of I-25 Business Loop, Littleton has been an important transportation hub since its incorporation. In 1893, the city built two bridges over Big Creek to connect with Aurora and Westminster respectively; these bridges remain operational today as part of I-25's Beltway System corridor. In 1925, Littleton became one of only two towns in Colorado that allowed citizens to light up their sidewalks with hand held radios during evening rush hour traffic congestion - this practice continues to this day as a local tradition known as "radio night". The first people to live in what is now Littleton were the Menominee and Puebloas. The first post office was opened in 1868. From 1870 to 1875, Littleton was known as Aurora. After Aurora became its own municipality, it changed its name to Littleton on November 3, 1907. The most notable resident of Littleton during its early years was James Wickersham who served as Mayor from 1865 to 1867 and again from 1870 to 1875. Wickersham developed the city's water supply and built two flour mills while serving as mayor.
