The Littleton Coast Guard station has been a vital part of the community since its establishment in 1903. The Coast Guard Station has played an important role in keeping our citizens and visitors safe while on our local and statewide borders. The Littleton Coast Guard Station is one of only a few stations in the country that specializes in aviation security. In addition to providing security for local airport terminals, we also provide security for major sporting events and other large gatherings. We rely heavily on the help of our volunteer firefighters who often respond during heavy weather conditions. On July 1, 1907, the Littleton Coast Guard was created. It was part of the Colorado State Militia and it's first commander was Captain George P. Meeker. On December 12, 1917, Captain John A. Waddell became captain and he continued to lead the coast guard until his retirement in 1951. In that year, Lieutenant Commander Clifford C. Hynes became captain and he led the coastguard until his death on May 14, 1990. From 1990-1997 Captains Harry J. Robb and Rick White were in command of the coast guard before Robb retired on October 5th 1997. The current captain is Bill Gorman who has been with the coast guard since November 2000
Littleton, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 10,653 at the 2010 census. Littleton is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that makes up Littleton was first inhabited by Native Americans and early settlers were farmers. It wasn't until 1876 when miners discovered copper veins in the area and started to come to Littleton to prospect for treasure. In 1912, gold was Phelps Dodge's first discovery in this area and became a mainstay of the economy. Copper mining continued until 1952 when it merged with other companies to form United States Mines Corporation (USM). This left Littleton as an agricultural center with smaller businesses providing services such as grocery stores, automotive repair shops, health clinics, and schools. In recent years, many new businesses have opened up in Littleton including technology startups like Lyft and Pinterest; fashion retailers like H&M and Zara; restaurants like Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Amy's Bakeshop; and homebuilders like Lennar Home Loans and Trulia Incorporated. All these businesses have brought new life to an aging town that continues to rely on agriculture as its primary industry. One important aspect of the town's economy is its location close to Interstate 25 which provides access to bothDenver International Airport (DIA)and Highway 24 which runs along the Front Range from Denver down into Mexico County. This has helped keep Littleton affordable for residents while also allowing it to remain an economically vibrant community that offers plenty of opportunities for economic growth.
