Littleton, Colorado is a city located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 9,746 at the 2000 census and 10,878 at the 2010 census. Littleton is part of the Lafayette, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Littleton were French traders in 1765. early settlers were men from central Colorado who founded what became known as the "Denver and Rio Grande Railroad" town in 1872. The railroad led to growth in Littleton because it connected Denver with other parts of Colorado and Mexico City. Development continued after the railroad's closure until 1958 when Littleton became its own municipality. In 1916, a local school board recommended that Littleton be renamed after General John J. Pershing because he had been an important figure in American military history and because his name sounded like "Colorado's John J." Littleton, Colorado is a small town located in the shadow of Rocky Mountains. The population was 5,021 at the 2010 census. Littleton has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and has one of the oldest continuous governments in the Western United States. It is also home to the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Health Sciences, one of only two universities in Colorado with a medical school. The first Europeans to visit Littleton were French explorers on their way to find new routes to California in 1795. As they passed through this area on their way back east, they noted that there was a large mountain range nearby and named it Montrose after another Frenchman who had explored this region earlier that year. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Littleton occurred shortly thereafter when John Wesley arrived with his family from England in 1824. They founded a cabin known as Cedar Grove on land that still stands today. In 1828, General James Haggerty moved his military camp from Fort Lyon up the Arkansas River valley and established Fort Haggarty here on July 4th in order to keep traders away from his newly discovered ranching district northwest of Denver. In 1830, he renamed this post Cherry Creek because many local trees were being cut down for fuelwood near where he had built it some time before. By 1834, most of Cherry Creek had been abandoned due to depletion of groundwater resources; however, parts were reused as grazing lands by local ranchers until 1906 when an effort began to redevelop these areas into a more residential setting called West Highland Village which eventually became Littleton’s primary suburb.
