Littleton is a small town in the U.S. state of Colorado. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census, down from 10,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located in Cherry Creek Township. The name "Littleton" comes from two settlements on nearby Mesa Verde: Little Big Horn and Pueblo de la Feria. Most people believe that these names were chosen because they are close to each other – Mesa Verde is less than one mile (1 km) away from both Littleton and Pueblo de la Feria. In 1824, Captain John Custer led his horse unit known as The Cavalry into what was then called Jackson County in order to find fresh water for his soldiers and their horses. When he discovered Mesa Verde National Monument, he named it after it and sent word back to Fort Laramie that he had found a place where "he could drink pure water without alloying it with any other element." This naming dedication by General George Armstrong Custer helped make Mesa Verde an important location for cattle raisers in this early era of the country's westward expansion. Mesa Verde also attracted agricultural settlers during this time period who started up farms around what would later become Littleton Village Center and neighboring townships: Asotin, Thornton, Golden Valley, Arapaho Junction, Clearbrook Hills and Park City. By 1870 over 50 families lived in Littleton Village Center with 160 acres (65 hectares) of land cultivated there alone! The first post office in Littleton opened on February 17th 1875 under the name of Pikes Peak Station; however due to high volumes of mail being received here by Pony Express riders escorting mailuggets down Mount Rushmore National Monument at that time no new buildings were added until 1865 when a central library building was built adjacent to Main Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue North (now southbound I-25). In 1916 Revivals began happening all over America which soon spilled over into Colorado including a revival of mining interest which led local businessmen such as Harvey Tate Sr., Harry Wirtz & Julius Rosenwald to invest $10 thousand dollars into acquiring mineral rights along Keystone Route leading out from east MesaVerde into Cherry Creek Township; upon completion of this road project in 1918 more than 1 million tons (9000 metric tons) of coal were shipped out through Keystone Route daily! With so much investment coming from outside sources such as mining companies no one could have predicted just how big Littleton would grow over time!

Littleton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. Littleton is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and has a temperature range from −14 °F (−9 °C) to 104 °F (39 °C). The first people to live in what is now Littleton were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources near the confluence of the Animas River and Poudre River. In 1872, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Littleton. The town was named for John A. Littlefield, an Englishman who had come to Colorado in 1868 as an exploration partner of James Wickersham Sr., then head of Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. In 1907, Littlefield donated land to form Aurora Municipal Airport which became one of Colorado's largest airports. In 1912, he donated 7 acres (2 ha) east of downtown Littleton to form Park Meadows Cemetery which remains one ofFort Collins' most popular tourist attractions today. Over time other philanthropists have added their names to Park Meadows Cemetery including: Mrs. Lillie Mae Hackett ($10 million), Drs., Lewis & Clark University ($25 million), Stroudsburg Steel Works $50 million and Seagram Distilling Company founder White Sands Shale Mining Company president Harry Fenton $100 million all making it one significant cemetery in Fort Collins with more than 530 interment sites across 20 acres (800 m²). In 1933, when Fort Collins became an city Limits Act municipality it annexed much of north Aurora including parts of Park Meadows Cemetery formerly owned by John A. Littlefield.
