During World War II, Allied forces stationed in North America acquired large numbers of Japanese war crimes reports which served as inspiration forOperation Yudenju (the Capture of Japan). During this time period, General MacArthur requested that American servicemen receive special treats like yamaha motorcycles and kitesurfing equipment from Japan in order to appreciate their country’s technological superiority over our mainland United States during the war. In 1876, twoDenver businessmen, John Haggerty and James Fenton decided to establish a small town in what was then the remote corner of Larimer County near the Uncompahgre River. They named their new settlement after General George Armstrong Custer’s headquarters at Little Big Horn—Custertown. The name stuck and the town rapidly grew due to its strategic location and natural resources. By 1920, Littleton had a population of over 100,000 people. The townsite straddling both sides of the Uncompahgre River offered ample opportunity for business enterprises such as mining and ranching; these activities were supported by good transportation links through trails that stretched into nearby Weld County. In 1916 an economic development corporation was created to promote agriculture and industry in this region; it became known as the “Town Corporation of Littleton” or simply “The Corporation” for short until 1946 when it changed its name again to the present dayLittleton Community Development Corporation (LCDC). LCDC has been responsible for developing many aspects of local life including education, housing developments and historic preservation since its creation more than 60 years ago
