Littleton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. Littleton is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Littleton was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto on his way northward in 1541. He named it La Vaca del Norte because of an animal he saw there. The area that includes present-day Littleton and some adjoininglying municipalities was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century as part of the Pueblo Revolt against Spanish rule. A ranch called La Bolsa (“the pouch”) was established near present-day Rifle about 1800 by fur trappers and traders operating out of Fort Larimer. The early settlers were men from New Mexico and California who had come to join wagon trains heading east for Independence Hall during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1871, Denver entrepreneur John Dickson founded Dickson & Co., which became one of the largest mercantile companies in America with interests including lumber, coal, cattle, flour and other goods exported to Europe and Asia. In 1902, after being acquired by J C Penney Company president Frank Vanderlip, Littleton's downtown changed hands several times before its final sale to George Weyerhaeuser in 1928 as part of a larger land acquisition across town that included much of modern Littleton Village development west of Broadway Avenue between Academy Drive and Iverson Road. Weyerhaeuser built many of Denver's most famous buildings including Penney Plaza (1928), 20 East Broad Street (1932), 1650 Brighton Boulevard (1938), First National Bank Building (1939), Uptown shopping center (1960) and eventually owned all but two blocks east of Iverson Road before selling it to Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2003 for $225 million USD making it one of the largest corporate acquisitions ever made in Colorado history. From 1938 until its closure as Anheuser-Busch InBev's Rocky Mountain Brewery in 1996 its main retail presence was located at Golden Corral Steakhouse on Main Street within walking distance both from Weyerhaeuser Stadium on Interstates 25&70 or from Boettcher Stadium on Interstate Welcoming Parkway just outside town limits; however production ceased at Rocky Mountain Brewery altogether after 1996 due to increased competition from craft breweries throughout Colorado led particularly by MillerCoors Inc..
