Littleton, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 8,848 at the 2010 census. It is one of several towns that make up the Littleton metropolitan area. Littleton is located on the eastern edge of northern Denver County and is bordered by Jefferson County to the north, Arapahoe County to the east, and Douglas County to the south. The first people in what is now Littleton were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near where Fort Lyon now stands. They called their land "the Great Plains." The United States Exploring Expedition under Captain John Davenport explored these regions in 1806-1807 and named them for General Andrew Johnson's brother-in-law Sir George Jones (1768-1840), who had served as military governor of Ohio from 1796 to 1800. General James Halleck selected a site for a post on February 14, 1819, about four miles northeast of present day Littleton along Arapahoe Creek. Named Fort Halleck after General Halleck's flagship during Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign of 1864-1865, this fortification protected settlers traveling northwest over Arapahoe Creek into Jefferson and Douglas Counties while they traversed those counties on their way to Ft. Larimer in Weld County or Ft. Collins in Old Colorado Territory before reachingDenver proper. In 1861, when Denver was admitted as a state into the Union, residents of little league towns east of State Line Avenue made an unsuccessful attempt to secede from Adams County because they did not want anything else done with their land besides farming it out to individual citizens who might choose not to stay within Adams County limits when statehood was granted; instead they voted unanimously against annexation by Denver without any representation from little league towns east of State Line Avenue which would have given them voting rights on issues affecting all county residents regardless of residency status inside or outside Adams Countie
