The Littleton Navy Yard was established in 1865 and it has been a part of the Colorado Springs community since that time. The original property on which the yard was located consisted of only a few acres, but over time, the navy grew rapidly and required more land. In 1912, the navy purchased an entire block of land east of Interstate 25 for $2 million. This purchase created what is now known as Naval Air Station Littleton. The little-known history of this station dates back to World War I when it was used as a training ground for military aircraft pilots. During World War II, NAS Littleton became one of the first sites in America to be equipped with naval submarines. In 1951, NAS Littleton became home to Fleet Marine Force Command’s (FMFC) 2nd Marine Division headquarters after FMFC moved from Fort Lewis in Tacoma Washington. NAS Littleton played an important role during both world wars by providing housing and facilities for enlisted Marines and sailors who worked on American warships afloat or ashore. After the war, NASLittleton saw increased activity due to its location near Fort Carson and other defense installations in western Colorado Springs.NAS Littleton continued its active role through many years until its closure in 1994 due to budget cuts mandated by then-Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. Since then, no major changes have occurred at NAS Littleton other than periodic maintenance and expansion projects that have resulted in new barracks, a library/study area, new dockside buildings for storage and berthing purposes, and a visitor center designed by noted architectural firm Krieger & Associates. In 1996, NAVLITTLETON reopened as an airfield under FAA regulation following Operation Desert Storm when USS Normandie (CV-19) became the first ship ever sunk at sea while serving with U.S Armed Forces personnel worldwide since WWII! The USMC Museum at NAS LITTLETON opened in 2001 as one of only two such museums internationally devoted exclusively to maritime history!
