Littleton is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 7,574 at the 2010 census. Littleton is one of the most populous towns in Weld County and one of the largest communities in north-central Colorado. It is also one of the fastest-growing towns in the state. The first settler in Littleton was John Denton who arrived on July 7, 1876. Denton named his new community after himself and his wife, Eleanor Denton. The plat for Littleton Township was filed on December 11, 1878 and became effective January 1, 1880 under US West Fork Township Act No. 3 of 1879. The name “Littleton” originated from an argument between two settlers over a pea gravel driveway that ran east-west through the center of town. One man wanted to call it “Dentonville” while the other wanted to call it “Plymouth” because he had grown up near Plymouth Tavern on Pikes Peak (now part of downtown). Ultimately they decided upon “Littleton” as it sounded more like their home town than either place namesakes would have done otherwise. Although beginnings can be traced back to early pioneer days there are many key moments that helped shape Littleton into what it is today: In 1911 when Denver Post editor H C Beattie purchased land around current day Downtown Littleton from Hiram Sibley and Wm G Harding; Beattie renamed the area Park Hill which served as Littletons central business district until 1963 when he sold all but a small piece of that parcel to businessman Harry Chandler for $2 million making Park Hill officially Downtown Littlenton again! In 1916 residents organized themselves into a Citizens Association which successfully lobbied for incorporation into the city of Denver; this event marks not only our Towns roots but also its independence fromCity Hall! On October 23rd 1920 Big Sioux Indian chief Crazy Horse led a large force against white miners seeking access to coal seams under Rocky Mountain National Park - this event marked arguablythe biggest battle between these groups ever fought! On November 10th 1923 local citizens convened an emergency meeting due to widespread damage caused by severe flash flooding following rainstorms; during this meeting commissioners were elected for mayor, recorder & assessor with powers over public works including streets, water systems & fire protection!
