Littleton, Colorado is a small town in the United States. The population was 9,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Littleton is home to Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Park and to Littleton Community College. The area that would become Littleton was first settled by the Hidatsa and Cheyenne people in the early 1800s. They built lodges near what is now downtown Littleton and developed agriculture as their mainstay. In 1876, local prospector John Dolan discovered coal in what would later be called "Dolan's Hill". Mining began soon after and became an important industry in early Littleton. By 1881, over 50% of all output from coal mining came from little more than a few thousand acres of land around present-day downtown Littleton and between Aurora and North Aurora. Because of this importance, much of the town was built on high ground with limited access to water or other resources which led to its nickname "Hilltown" during its early years. In 1907,control of most major mines passed into private hands whenDenver Municipal Railway (DMN) went bankrupt; however, flour production continued until 1935 under various agreements between DMN owners and local farmers who had access to mills outside Denver until those mills closed due to competition from large American companies such as Swift & Co., Minneapolis Mill Works Company (now known as Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Company), Armour Mills Inc., Pueblo Milling Company (now known as Pueblo Western Coal Mines), Cook’s Canning plant etc.. In 1933 Denver City Council voted 6-2 against annexation by Littleton because it saw no benefit for Littleton aside from providing tax revenues forDenver while also reducing services enjoyed by residents living within city limits including library hours). During World War II many businesses located within city limits closed but some managed to reopen like Jardine Foods which became one of Colorado’s leading food producers before merging with General Mills in 1955 named “Jardine Hormone Corporation” today still headquartered in Pittsburg PA although operations are now divided among several units worldwide including China Wafers production plants at Hefei province close to Beijing airport where they have been based since 1978) while other corporations relocated out of state such as Bechtel Corporation which manufactured plutonium weapons at an abandoned mine east of Longmont until 1958 then moving south into Coryell County operated a uranium mill there until its closure in 1984 followed by Essar Steel whose products include barsodesulfide steel used in structural steel fabrication before being acquired by ArcelorMittal plc.) Littleton is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Littleton is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name " Littleton" was given to the community by John Dickey in 1868 when he purchased a piece of land east of what is now downtown Littleton from David Tilton. The first post office in Littleton was established in 1870 and remained open until it closed in 1902. In 1916, Big Thompson Avenue (now US Highway 287) was built as a main street through what is today Littleton. On July 1, 1915, the Town of Littleton became an official municipality under Colorado Revised Statutes § 16-4-701 et seq., following a vote by its citizens. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 2,811 people residing in the town. Of those 796 (27%) were Black or African American and 810 (31%) were White American Citizen
