Louisville, Colorado is a town in Southern Colorado located on the banks of the San Miguel River. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1907 by Morley and his wife Lillian Haggerty as a small farming community on land that Morley had acquired from the Ute tribe. The name "Lunenburg" was chosen because it meant "place of peace." In 1912, Morley donated part of his ranch to be used as a training ground for American soldiers during World War I. After the war, Lunenburg became home to many military personnel who taught local farmers how to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1922, Morley's son-in-law Wallace Waddell started manufacturing saddles and horseshoes in Lunenburg. Waddell's business grew into one of America's most successful saddlemakers until he died in 1981. The Townspeople designated an area around Waddell's former factory as the Waddell Park Recreation Area in memory of him and his business partners. When Lunenburg began to experience rapid growth after becoming a popular tourist destination for visitors visiting Southern Colorado Springs, mayors from other towns decided to form their own municipalities withinSouthern Colorado Springs so that they could compete with Lunenburg for economic development opportunities and tax dollars. On November 5, 1932, a vote was taken by the Township Council to merge with neighboring Thornton Township due to growing concerns about its lack of infrastructure (such as water supply) and potential annexation by Southwestern Rancho County while residents were still protesting annexation efforts by both townships. Louisville experienced rapid growth following its merger with Thornton township due to its location on state highway 24 which facilitated easy access by tourists and businesses looking for an escape from Northern Colorado Springs during winter months; however, this also caused congestion on Route 66 which diverted traffic away from Louisville instead leading some people to refer to it as "the Connector". By 1984, when Route 66 was rerouted through downtown Denver due to construction projects along Interstate 25%, much of what had once been called Louisville had been lost within Downtown Denver while some buildings remained but were used as offices or retail space; however, remnants of Lunenburg can still be seen today more proximate thereto than anywhere else in Downtown Denver given that much of Historic Hill Street has been replaced with new streetscape developments including residential neighborhoods that are often perpendicular towards historic Hill Street properties line up like shopping malls - making them easy targets for vandalism (e.g., spray painting).
Louisville, Colorado was founded on November 3, 1912 by John H. Sikes and his wife Lillie C. Sikes. The town was named after the Louisville, Kentucky area in which it was settled. In 1916, Louisville became a county seat of Douglas County and remained so until it was renamed to Jefferson City in 1935. It briefly became an independent city before reverting back to its original name in 1950.
