Louisville, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of North America. The population was 5,957 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Forks, ND Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Louisville were the Anasazi. They built their settlement near present-day Pueblo de las Animas on the edge of a large canyon that runs along the Arkansas River. They hunted and gathered animal products from this location for their own use and trade with surrounding tribes. In 1868, wagon train founder Kit Carson passed through Louisville on his way to California and reported seeing an area that would become Colorado called "The Black Hills". He named it after General George Armstrong Custer's battalion which had fought at Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. The town started as a trading post near where he had seen the hills, but soon developed into an important junction for travelers heading southward or eastward along I-25 and U-811 (later US 93). Due to its strategic location, Louisville became known as a stopover forStagecoach passengers en route between Fort Collins and Independence Pass before continuing onward to Aspen or Telluride. In response to increasing railroad traffic through its valley in search of coal and other minerals, Louisville began developing as an industry center with more than 50 businesses opening during Prohibition era (1912–1933). After prohibition ended, many businesses closed down due to competition from more established cities such as Denver and Boulder; however, some continue operation until today including 4K Wine Company & Spirits
Louisville was founded in 1828 as the first permanent settlement in what is now Colorado. The original town was located on the east bank of the Arkansas River, and it prospered due to its location and natural resources. By 1840, Louisville had become a major center for trade and commerce in the area. It also became a popular stop for travelers looking to explore the new territory that would later become Colorado. In 1849, a group of settlers led by James Waddell moved from eastern Kansas into what is now Colorado. They were based out of Louisville and began developing the land around it for agriculture and ranching. In 1870, they made another move, this time moving westward into present-day Denver County. This addition to their community helped lead to Louisville's growth as an incorporated city. As part of its efforts to expand its reach throughout Colorado, Louisville began construction of a downtown district in 1892. The project saw significant success thanks to its plan which featured large blocks of office space along with public transportation options such as streetcar lines and buses. The district eventually grew enough that it became known as "The City". Today, much of downtown Louisville remains intact thanks to its well-maintained infrastructure and Historic District designation.
