In the late 1800s, Louisville, Colorado was known as a maritime town. The city's harbor played host to many ships that transported goods and passengers between the United States and Europe. The SS Merrimack arrived in Louisville on December 12, 1892. At that time, it was one of the largest passenger vessels ever built. The ship's captain, James Aiken, spent his voyage visiting various ports around the world before arriving in New York on January 6th of 1893. During its trip across the Atlantic Ocean, the SS Merrimack handled a variety of tasks: sailed as a luxury liner; served as depot cargo for railways; and participated in an 1893 commercial expedition that sailed from Liverpool to Barcelona with hopes of discovery of new oil fields off Spain's coast. On July 5th of 1896, while sailing from Liverpool to America via Havana, Cuba, the SS Merrimack ran aground on rocks near Key Largo Beach on Florida's Gulf Coast. Eighteen people were killed when their ship overturned during heavy seas and high winds; however, all but two survivors were rescued by Lifeboat No 2 (later renamed USS Miami). The tragedy led to a change in maritime etiquette: no ships larger than four or five meters long could operate reliably at sea without stoping frequently for repairs or refueling. This restriction applied particularly to liners transporting passengers and freight between countries such as America and Europe—a route that had been open onlyto large warships up until then.
