Louisville was founded in 1876 and has been a small agricultural community since its inception. Today, it is a bedroom community for the Denver–Boulder metropolitan area and smaller towns within its boundaries. The history of Louisville begins with many pioneers who set out from northeastern Kansas in 1876 to find new land to settle. A group of men including John Witherspoon, Andrew Jackson and James Lyon arrived at what is now Louisville on July 11, 1876. They were looking for a place to build their own rancho after discovering gold near Telluride, Colorado in 1859. The newcomers found success farming central Colorado but soon realized that they needed more space to expand their operations. In 1881, they bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land east of downtown Louisville from Major General Edwin Stanton for $5 per acre ($140/ha). This purchase created what would become known as the Stanton Ranching District which stretched from Boulder City south to Trinidad and north to Aspen Creek Valley. By 1888, they had developed 50 miles (80 km) of wagon track linking their crops with markets in Denver and Fort Collins while also building six miles (10 km) of railroad tracks connecting their properties with other areas within range. In 1893-1894, Louisville became an incorporated town when it was one block wide following passage of an act by the state legislature authorized by Govt. George Washington Carver Some boosters wanted this addition because it would give them control over local government which would restrict competition from other farmers within their boundaries However incorporation did not lead to increased development or prosperity as incorporation only allowed business owners who could provide evidence that they were engaged in agriculture to be counted as residents . In 1915 when prohibition laws were passed limiting liquor sales throughout most western states , alcohol became an important factor among entrepreneurs looking for new business opportunities In 1925 when Interstate 70 was built bypassing downtown Louisville , many businesses abandoned town citing high taxes and limited access to Interstate highways . After World War II , tourism took off due to the booming job market in both Denver and Boulder Although some businesses returned during postwar years until crime rates began trending upwards during the late 1970s & early 1980s , overall growth stopped until 1990 when nearby Aurora adopted similar regulations prohibiting gambling

The community's name comes from the creek that runs through it. The townsite was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The population was 2,512 at the 2000 census. In 1907, Hiram S. Wright founded Louisville, Colorado as a ranching community on 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) northeast of Aspen with access to the Purgatory Creek watershed and open range land east of Aspen mountain peak (). He built a two-story log cabin and got help from local stonemasons to build roads and schools (). In 1928 he donated 1 million dollars (equivalent to $ at current prices) towards establishing an agricultural college in nearby Aspen so that westerners could learn how to farm there (). The school opened in 1929 as US Air Force Academy Preparatory School (), one of many such institutions around Colorado during the 1930s as part of President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal . It became a public university in 1964 when it merged with Denver State University . One reason for its early growth was easy access to water: Purgatory Creek lay just across town from Wright's ranch house on what is now First Street (). There were also forest fires which burned fiercely throughout most of those years – not something that would have been encountered more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) away inDenver or any other major city. A second factor may have been related to Wright himself: He had wealth beyond anything most people possessed at that time - his father had bequeathed him sizable amounts of money plus some stocks and real estate (). This made him one possible candidate for incorporation into larger communities; others who considered incorporation included banker Averill Harriman (), postmaster general Albert Einstein () and attorney George Washington Carver (); however all six proposed incorporations failed.. Wright finaly incorporated Louisville on November 5th, 1907 without offering financial assistance or voting rights (. ). At 2,512 residents () it soon outgrew its founder’s original 4-acre parcel (), but continued expanding rapidly due largely to donations from locals including industrialist/ranching pioneer John Wesley Hardin () upon whom much later Louisville would attribute some significant downtown development . From 1916 until about 1950 when oil production scaled back significantly nearby Trinidad Basin (), this rapidly growing town served primarily as a bedroom community for wealthy farmers like Hardin; today’s downtown area only began acquiring serious commercial presence after oil drilling resumed nearthe border between Lamar County and Weld County about 1990

The population of Louisville grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to heavy industry and new construction. The Economic Development Administration helped create several downtown businesses including National Cash Register, American Fidelity and Trust Company, General Motors Corporation and Wrigley's chewing gum factory. In 1935, Louisville became an official state capital; however, it remained a small town until the early 1960s when its population exploded with the advent of Interstate 25.
