Air Force deployed gift history in Montrose, Colorado dates back to the early 1940s when the Air Force became a service branch of the United States Army. The Air Force was allotted land at Montrose Municipal Airport in 1941 and began operations as an auxiliary air force providing strategic bombardment support for Army troops in World War II. From its inception, the Air Force stationed gift units at Montrose Municipal Airport. During World War II, gifts from members of the civilian community were used to support military missions. In 1945, Colonel Harry C. Wittman, USAF (Ret.) became director of Auxiliary Forces at Montrose Municipal Airport and directed all aspects of gifting by civilians on behalf of the Air Force. In 1947, Lieutenant Colonel John Hogg assumed command of 1st Bombardment Wing which was then located at Montrose Municipal Airport. In 1949-1950, 1st Bombardment Wing moved to base at Buckley AFB where it continued to provide strategic bombardment support for Army troops during Operation Desert Storm. During this time period, gifts from citizens continue to be utilized by the Air Force as part of its Gift History program. In 1990-1991 Majestic Airlines donated four Beechcraft Baron aircraft which were used by 4th Fighter Squadron as auxiliary aircraft for flyaway photo launches conducting aerial reconnaissance over Kuwait during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The Colorado Air National Guard's 240th Airlift Wing deployed a gift basket to Montrose Elementary School on December 5, 2009 in commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of Operation Christmas Child. The basket contained items such as books, toys, candy and coffee filters.
Montrose is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Montrose is located on the south border of Douglas County and east of Aspen. Montrose was founded in 1868 by men from New York City who had come toColorado to prospect for coal and silver. The first post office was established in 1870. In 1901, Montrose became part of the newly formedDouglas County. The original name of the town may have been derived from an incident which took place there: two men were riding horseback through the town when they were mistaken for Indians and shots were fired as a warning. The buildings that still stand in Montrose are evidence of its early days as a mining community. One such building is the Montrose Mining Company Store which was built in 1868 and still stands today. Another old structure that still stands is the Post Office which was constructed in 1901-02 by JMW Turner with assistance from his father John Wesley Turner Sr.. The downtown area served as a stop on travel between Aspen andDenver until after World War II when Interstate 25 replaced road travel between those cities as main arteries connecting southern Colorado with northern Mexico and other parts of North America. In 2001, after 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington D.C., President George W Bush announced Operation MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - a worldwide effort to collect reuseable items from every address in America! The resulting "Operation Sunbeam" collected over 350 pounds of gently used electronics including TVs, computers, hearing aids and so forth! Today's USAAF gift history starts with Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2009-10 followed by Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2011-12...and isn't stopping there! Montrose is a small town in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is located east of Denver on I-25 and west of Fort Collins on State Route 24. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Montrose was founded in 1872 as a trading post by United States Army soldiers under General George Armstrong Custer during his advance through Colorado Territory in search of Indian country. After the army's defeat at Little Bighorn, Montrose grew rapidly as traders and travelers fled Custer's columns searching for safety and protection from possible Apache attack or pursuit by the American forces pursuing them. In 1892, Montrose became an incorporated town with a population of 100 people when it annexed nearby Glendale and portions of Castle Rock and Park Hill townships. In 1912, Montrose voters approved annexation of all but two parcels from Park Hill Township because they felt that their own community was too small to support itself without additional annexations. In 1932, Montrose merged with neighboring Fort Collins to form one municipality with a population of over 30,000 people. During World War II, Montrose played an important role in the war effort as its military installations made deliveries to Allied forces Forces commanders across Europe via airlift using Boeing 707s operated by the Air Transport Command (ATC). The ATC also used these airplanes to drop supplies and troops into Germany during Operation Market Garden, which successfully ended Hitler's takeover of Holland on October 20th 1944; this event is generally considered to be one of the turning points in World War II.

The population of Montrose grew slowly until the early 2000s, when it began to rise rapidly as a result of new development along Interstate 25 and Colorado Boulevard.
